I am starting out veeery slow with plants! I have a couple of bits of Java moss on a bit of bogwood and some slate. Unfortunately it is looking a bit brown around the edges and has some weird 'thread' on it. It sort of looks like a spider web between the leaves?

What is it and how can I get rid of it?

sounds like hair algae (at a guess), is it a pale green colour?

I had a large amount of java moss in my tank and had the same problem. I had to manually remove the algae with a toothbrush, but it grew back everytime. Eventually I just got rid of the java moss and I haven't had the algae problem since.

Thanks for the input :)

It isn't really a colour. It is so fine it looks silvery.

I don't have algae problems normally. I don't overfeed and the lights are never on for more than 8hrs. How annoying :(

Would riccia be better?

How long has your tank been cycling/cycled for? What's your lighting? And do you dose with any sort of ferts? How long do you keep your lights on?

Also what color is the algea? It sounds like brown hair algea which is common for newer setups especially planted ones.

We can give you a better answer with some answers and possibly a pic.

It is a mature set-up. No special lightning, no ferts, nothing. Lights on for 8hrs in the weekday, longer at weekends.

As I said before it is translucent, kind of silvery. It doesn't really have a colour.

have you tried to pull it off? I know this is gonna sound a bit silly, but is not the cotton holding the moss in place is it?

If you pop a pic up it'll be easier to ID.

I only have the one bit of thread holding it down, so I don't think that is it. I can pull it off but it grows back.

Difficult to get a photo because it is so fine:

And this is the moss on wood:
