Play, I shall explain a bit about my set up, then start draining all your brains of useful info that I need. :D
First off, I can't put any live plants in my 10 gallon as the apple snail eats anything green. anyone else have this problem? My 30 gallon, I tried having some Java ferns in it, they died. I dried having some Java moss, it didn't die but didn't grow. none of my other tanks have anything.

I tied the java moss down to some plastic mesh with fishing line per one artical I read, and moved it to my shallow 'shoebox' tank... I got it at walmart for like, 99 cents and its basically supposed to be a clear shoe box, so, maybe 10-11 long 6-7 wide and 6 tall? The Java moss seems to be growing here.

I have a spare 2.5 gallon and a spare 1.5 gallon bowl that I'd rather not put fish in. Is there any way I could use either of these to help grow plants? I could put them where they would receive lots of natural sunlight, or set it up to where they receive light from a desk lamp that uses regular 75(?) House bulbs.

If I was going to do this, what sort of equipment / supplies would I need, what sort of plants would be reccomended, and would I need an airstone or bubbler to go in either or both tanks?

So out of the 26 or so that looked at this, no one has an opinion on what I can or can't do with a 2.5 gallon to try and grow plants? O.O

first off what ever plants you grow even low light plants they'er going to need about 10hours dedicated light per day. the chances of getting anything to gow on just sun light is pretty slim, so the first thing i would do is pick a tank to grow some plants in. buy a light for this tank, it doesn't matter if the tank is the size of a wine glass you could still grow somthing in it if you get the basics right. if you want to keep things simple to start with aim for around 1wpg you'll grow some moss and java fern easily with this amount of light but don't expect miricals it wont grow fast!

oh and apple snails will devour everthing so move them out of your planted tank! they love moss i had this problem!

Are you planning on just growing plants for the sake of growing plants in the two small tanks? Or do you want them for your 30 gal?

I just want to try and get them to grow at the moment, as my breenthumb is pretty black and rusty right now. I was thinking if I can manage to get some smaller plants growing and healthy, then I might move them to the 30 gallon as foreground plants.

I have a 25 watt incadescant (spelling?) Light and bulb for the 2.5 gallon, I just wasn't sure if that would be enough. I've pretty much decided to keep the apple snail in the hospital tank, so no worries about him eating the plants. ^_^
