What tank size, lighting, plants etc. do you have?

Put very simply, fertilisation (plant food) is only really necessary if you have enough light and planting to utilise it.

To answer your question most planted hobbyists use "plant food". Without it our plants would soon starve and die due to the nutrient demands within a highly lit, CO2 rich environment.
