Hey,

I've had my tank for about 6 months now, and this is the first power cut we're going to have. EDF are knocking our supply off from 8am til 4pm tomorrow.

What can I do to help with the fish tank? I'm worried about the temp dropping too much, and oxygen levels in the water.

Am I fussing over nothing?

Dan.

hi there i wouldnt worry about it too much the temp shouldnt drop too much as it is not the middle of winter yet lol.
i have just gone through a week of electric being off from 8.30 till 4 and my tanks are all fine.

Another thing you can do during longer power outages if you have an external filter is to simply lift the output hose off the tank edge and put it down in a bucket on the floor such that its enough lower than the filter box that water siphons from the tank, through the cannister filter and to the bucket. Let it siphon an amount roughly equal to the filter box volume or slightly more and then return the host to its normal place. Pour the bucket water back into the top of the tank, making some splash. Doing this every several hours is the idea.

This accomplishes a couple of minor things. It takes the stagnant water away from surrounding the biofilms of your bacterial colonies in the filter, giving the bacteria some fresh food. It returns some water that is somewhat treated back to the tank and it stirs a little oxygen into the tank as the water is poured back in. Can't hurt!

Luckily I work in IT. I've stolen a 2200VA UPS to run my air stones on, that should keep some surface irritation going to keep oxygen levels and water moving.

You could use it to power DIY sponge filters then, and you shouldnt experiance too much of an ammonia build up.
