Piranha Over Filtration.

Currently I have a 30 Gal Tank Running a Topfin 30. (set on high & and I have every intention of getting a larger tank.)

The tank has been started from scratch (which I know is wrong but it's how it went)

1. Would it be worth my time over filtering it by getting a second filter of maybe equal capacity i.e. maybe another Topfin 30?

2. The tank is currently new would this be a good time to add a second filter or a bad time?

I am told having 2 filters is beneficial when doing filter changes.

Yes. There are no risks in adding a second filter during cycling. The benifet of having 2 filters is that you can change the media of one and leave the other to keep your nitrifying bacteria population healthy. You will need a second filter for that tank. What I would do is buy the filter(s) you will use on your bigger tank and hook that up to this tank to get some of the bacteria in your new filter. That way your new tank won't need to cycle.

So 2 x 30 gallon filters is ok for a 30 gallon tank with a fish in it? during cycle? Double confirming (trying to make no mistakes)

its not ideal with having the fish in it, but over filtering is a good thing as long as long as the current doesnt bother the fish. I have 700gph filtration on a 55 gallon tank, which comes out to about 13x an hour. it helps to keep the water cleaner. and it is helpful when starting up another tank like what has been said.

Well Currently I am running a Aqua Clear 3 stage 30 Gallon Just bought this and a Mechanical Topfin 30 on a 30 Gallon tank. The filter in this was from the original setup however however the filter was dry on arrival

but over filtering is a good thing as long as long as the current doesnt bother the fish.

He is a Piranha as far as I understand he likes currents

they should be fine. those to are rated for 150gph each. i dont know much about the quality of the filter but in terms of over filtering they should be good. i would still be doing regular large water changes thou.

I am doing 20% changes every 24hrs using tap water and conditioning it.

im not sure how sensitive piranhas are but it wouldnt hurt to change out more. just to be safe in my opinion.

They are suspose to be somewhat hardy ... What are you thinking 30 - 40%?

yea i would think so. Just to keep the ammonia down and i would test the water frequently.

With the tank came a products

1. 'Waste Control' - organic waste eliminator (nutrafin)
2. 'Green-X' - Phosphat Remover (Hagen)

Any of these worth actually using? As in to assist the cycle?

From what i understand about things that help the cycle.... the only thing that works really is mature media. I was suckered into buying this stuff called cycle for my tank and i never noticed a difference thou im not familiar with either of those.

I have used 'Cycle' myself ... I don't really have a method of gagging it's success ... it was the pet shop that told me I was making a big mistake in not using it.

ehhh allot of people on here would disagree. If you think about it. its "bennifitial bacteria in a bottle" but what is keeping it feed to keep it alive. Most people i have talked to on here say its not really all that helpful, but its definately not the end of the world if you dont.

I might keep adding it ... what harm could it do?
