Hi mark
my guess is that one of your cichlids is responisble for nibbling at the barbels, I have known a GT from work to bite off a pictus barbels before now

although if the substrate is dirty i believe the barbels can get infected and almost seemingly disappear.

i keep my substrate spotless i do weekly water change of 30 to 40 % and gravel vac every time my gues would be my blue acara as he has been getting a bit lordy lately

will they grow back ?

i'm not 100% sure but i would say no. But again i'm no expert on pictus catfish whiskers :P

Try asking in th catfish section. You will get better response :)

Yeah with clean water they should grow back in no time, provided he isn't constantly getting stressed by the attacker,
how many caves are there in the tank? might be worth adding a bit more cover for him

water is kept good and clean have a strict weekly maintinence regime. he is being left alone now the tank has 2 big mangrove roots a rocky area piece of bogwood and 2 hollow logs so loads of hidy holes . apart from the whiskers he seem healthy enough just seems to be almost dazed
