picture overload - planted 40G

I have to admit the lilys are prob a bit large for the tank, but they are soooooooo gorgeous you can't get rid of them :) Remember when I was going to bin mine cos I was trying to go for a miniature theme? I just didn't have the heart and I'm glad I kept them. My shrimp like them too.

That makes two with you surely zig?!! ;)

EI is the way forward, no doubt about it. Complete long-term algae freedom at last.

Something that may interest you planted guys - I visited New Leaf in Knaresborough today (bought a bubble counter). They have a 7 foot display tank, the full-works, everything Dennerle, pressurized CO2, mercury vapour lighting etc. etc. Cost over £3000 to set up. Get this - IT STILL HAD ALGAE. I didn't bother trying to explain that LOW nitrates and phosphates were more than likely the cause, they're all stuck in the old-school way of thinking regarding ferts (and have been "brain-washed" by the Dennerle marketing).

The UK is really quite well behind the US in terms of accepting that nitrates and phophates are not the enemy we once thought. You only have to see a few of the guy's tanks on this forum (zig, myself etc.) to witness the proof.

Just my two pennies.

PS Jim - Your tank is a great example of a Dutch/Nature hybrid IMO. My critisisms were for your benefit - and the fact that deep down I'm probably jealous and miss my old dutch layout. :)

Haha....brilliant £3000 spent on a tank and it still had algae, it makes the effort of learning EI in the beginning of my planted tank education all the more worthwhile when i hear that, and well worth the £15 i spent on the chemicals.

Auctually funny you mention your old Dutch style setup gf, i was searching for something on The PT the other day and i came across it accidently, its still there, i think the thread went back to last march or something, anyway i have to say it was very impressive, it looked excellent, it really stood out against most of the other setups you usually see over there, mostly nature type layouts, im not surprised you miss it, but thats whats great about this hobby you can constantly change the setup if you wish or have the money for plants.

Anyway not to highjack jimboos thread with my idle gossip, jimbooo you asked about the lillie i wasnt really sure but i did a bit of looking around, apperantly you have to train them to grow lower, so you cut off the higher growth and the new shoots should eventually stay lower to the ground if you keep doing this, one or two people also said that this will help the leaves stay smaller also, but i dont really know other than that, but apperantly them growing to tall and the leaves getting to big is a common problem.

If gf225 has criticism for jimboos tank then I'd hate to think what he'd have to say about mine....now I am definitely too scared to post pics of my planted tank in its current condition. Gimme some laterite and decent plants and I will be laughing :p

But seriously......your tank is stunning jimboo. We really need a Planted Tank of the Month...divided into sections such as small and large etc. I have NO criticism whatsoever. All you need to do now is come here, set my tank up like that, counsel me on how to look after it and we will be all set

Hmmm....back to fixing my scraggly mess of a 30gal tank...... :(

Have no fear - I don't normally critisise members tanks unless they ask for it. However, I always take a special interest in Jimbooo's tanks as (he'll back me up here) I helped him considerably from the start. I know that he is capable of producing even greater things - that is one reason for my comments and hopefully guidance.

yeah just for the record guys and girls here is a pic of both tanks about a year ago (prior to gf225's input)

lovely weren't they :hey: (thanks a million again george, feel free to add your comments whenever you like)

thanks again for all the comments, i'm in a rush so sorry i cant thank everyone seperatly.

zig: thanks for the lilly tip. i've actually been through that stage. they used to grow from gravel to surface in 2 days, not with the "training" it takes a week. the size is a little smaller now but not much.

Wow - just goes to show there is hope for us afterall :D - if you've come that far and sustained it over a year now (even considering your little holiday "disaster" ).

Well done :)

Well i think critique and criticism are two very different things.

dont worry about that zig, i've been pming angry platy with some help and advise, hence getting half the conversation on here. i know what she means.

i'm thankfull for the critique, it's no way near perfect and any advise is more than welcome.
