I'm looking for a shoal for a peculiarly shaped tank and would like to add a small shoal of fish. There's just SO many different kinds of schooling fish that it's getting overwhelming. The tank is 5.5 gallons *but* its 24" long, 6.5" wide, and 8" tall, so it has plenty of horizontal swimming room.

Requirement:
- small
- doesn't nip
- not aggressive
- not too active (nothing as energetic as zebra danios, for example)
- can be kept with a very peaceful betta
- not red
- can be kept in groups if 5/6
- it would be better if they weren't notorious jumpers

Do you guys have any good ideas? Would Harlequin Rasboras work? Or are they too big? Some kind of semi-transparent fish would be cool.

Edit: Also, the tank will be planted with driftwood and hiding spaces and such with an open spot for swimming.

Neon Tetras would be a great choice because their small and don’t usually jump, although I’d recommend a single fish or a few, maybe a dwarf gourami or something because that sound far to small for a shoal, a pic will be of great help.

I'm curious about them not being able to be notorious jumpers? Bettas are in this category so don't see why the schooling fish couldn't be as well?

Harlequin rasboras too big for this tank IMO.

Gouramis with bettas are a no-no.

I'm not sure what sort of schoolers to recommend, since while it's 24" long which is good, the gallonage doesn't allow for much bioload. I think I'd just stick to a snail with your betta or something along those lines.

I'm not too keen on neons, they're a bit too common and more colorful than what I wanted. The tank is currently at the glass shop, so no pictures. It almost looks like someone shrunk a 12 gallon long Mr.Aqua tank or cut the top off of a 6.6 gallon bookshelf case, but cooler, because it's a slate bottomed metaframe. If that helps you to visualize it.

It's going to have a glass like lid, so I guess it doesn't really matter, but I guess I'd feel a bit better. No to the harlequins then and I wasn't even considering a gourami. What about hengeli rasboras, are they any smaller?

hengelli rasboras look very much alike to the harliquins but their biggest size is a lot smaller than the harlequins :)
i have a school of six and they seem more than happy
