Hello

Payday this weekend and I will be buying a nano tank - my first go at saltwater.

I have been reading up on the marine side of things for years but have stuck with planted tanks until now.

From experience can you tell me which is the best nano tank to go for?

Id love a red sea Max but its out of budget so at the moment am looking at:

orca tl 550 - 125Ltr - I have found this all in one set up for about £200 online. IS it as good as I hope?

D&D Nano Cube 24 - looks nicer to me but less ltre for the money. Is this because the lighting is better?

Anyone else know of any other all in one set ups that are as good, better, cheaper than these two?

At the moment I am leaning towards the Orca.

Help would be appreciated.

There are many people on here who either started with the 550 or currently have the 550 - which is good as there is a lot of experiance of setting them up. I have just sold my own one to YF for £200 which included 10 k of live rock, live sand, some live stock and bits and pieces - there are some bargains to be had

D&D Nano Cube 24 - looks nicer to me but less ltre for the money. Is this because the lighting is better?

Nice tank and i think they now have halides, so yes better lighting

Be wary of deals that seem to good to be true, they often are!

Hi Seffie

Yes I am in the UK - Bristol.

I was lookign at this: Click

They do it with the stand for 260 ish, although I am not sure I will need it.

Can I keep a nice selection of Corals in it? I know there will some I cant but I don’t want to be too restricted.

Very excited - As much as I love tropical fish and high tech planted tanks it will be nice to not have to walk past the ridiculously colourful marine section at my lfs every time I go in!

If i was buying one again (and I would) I would not buy the stand - I would get myself a nice strong chest of drawers or the like. I don't like the stands, no space to store and seem rather flimsy to me.

You wouldn't be able to keep some types of coral, mainly sps, as they require a lot more lighting - but if you have a look at mine and my sisters thread on our orcas you can see the sort of things you can keep - there are a few others to take a look at as well :good: Garry and Morri to name just a couple.

Welcome! :D

I can only speak from my limited experience with the Orca 450. It is a good tank but requires some modding/equipment upgrades to make it really good (but the modding is fun!). Not sure if the 550 is the same.

Betta have now brought out a very tidy nano getting some good revues as well...looking one over yesterday and was well impressed. Actually considering mini's resun to one of these. Some nice touches added and comes with power skimmer built into rear chamber.

Hi Seffie - yes i have had a good read through your journal a few weeks back was a great read. Can you send me a link to that helpful coral book you have?

Agreed on the stand I think they look rubbish for the amount they cost. I have been looking around for a nice small sturdy chest. Everything is so flimsy these days - went into Ikea and a gentle breeze would have knocked most of theirs over!

hi, thanks for the link, unfortunatly i live down south at the moment. I went for the Orca anyway :)

What kind of modding? Lights? or do you mean powerheads/skimmer?

These areas i still need to ready up on> I hear i might need to get a better powerhead?

thanks)

Had a look, your right they do look nice. I was impatient and got an orca last night though!

Hi & Welcome. The Orca does not any mods. If you look into the Main section there is a list of book there. IF you wish I can put down the ones I have that have been useful.

Also ask the guys on here as many questions as possible, they are greta and always willing to help.

You will need an extra powerhead, I would buy either the tunze stream or a korallia 2. Also make sure the spray bar is turned up/round to get maximum agitation of the water

My 450 improved with new power heads and I am waiting for a new skimmer. Not sure if the 550 is the same though.

Yes thattts the book, thanks!

Yes powerhead is on my list. Photo's will come, I wont let myself take it out the box because I need to a) get my head around RO units and b) find a suitable piece of furniture to plonk it on.
Just booked two tickets to Marrakesh as a present for the Mrs and my tropical’s need some money this month so I have gone as far as I can this month unfortunately.

QUESTION:

RO water wise, do a lot of people with Nano's just drive to the LFS when they need to top up their tank or does it get annoying fast?

It gets annoying fast, also the quality of water from LFS isn't always great, I used to get mine from LFS but nitrates were high, and I just got so fed up going to get it, and my LFS is only 5 minutes away from me

Yes i can imagine it getting annoying. Will just have to try and get my head around the units and how best to plumb it in - im not too bad by stuff like plumbing isn’t my greatest skill!

Question:

Is there any benefit of using RO water with my tropical water changes?
