Nice! I think it looks much better -not- having plants obscure looking through the roots. In landscaping/aquascaping one of the psychological principles is that humans (having evolved from habitats at the margins of fields and trees) become very interested in any pathway, the outcome of which is slightly hidden. The theory is that its very much built in to us to think there might be either food or danger in that hidden direction, therefor it commands a greater part of our attention than a non-pathway type of area does. Thus it can be exploited by landscapers or aquascapers to draw greater interest from the viewer!
