Without knowing the tank size, inhabitants, tank readings (ph, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, etc....) and any other knowledge that may help us we can't really say anything

The tank size was a 20g flat hex and he was the only fish in the tank. The nitrates were 30, the nitrites were 0, the ph was 7. He has not been eating for over a month. I bought him sick because I felt bad for him.

Internal parasites, without looking at the fish. When it goes untreated it will cause the fish to starve, and the parasites will live off of the lining of the digestive tract.

To confirm this you would have to dissect, do a slide made from the scrapings of the inside of the digestive tract, and examine under a microscope. I know of one person in my area who has the equipment & knowledge, but he's really old & his health is declining.

I do have a detailed book on how to do this, but no equipment. This is a very specialized are of aquatics, something most people don't have access to. I think it would be interesting to learn if I had the time.

it was not eating for months and you didn't try to treat him or get him food that he will eat?

i suggest you do some google research on diseases and treatments.

Tolak's correct

Your Discus was suffering from an internal intestinal parasite infestation. Normally when the fish are not stressed and are kept in good conditions the parasites do not pose a problem, as their immune system keeps then under control.
I think your Discus's problems started before you bought him, but saying that it's a common problem and could have be easily been cured.
The meds that I suggested in the pm would have sorted him out for you, but because of your age/access to the fish shop and the cost you were unable to get them. Which was sad for you both.

Ah well at least he's not suffering now -_-

Anita

Thanks Anita. When I am 16 I am allowed to order of the internet. So then I wont have to watch fish suffer with internals again. I will never buy a fish that is sick unless a quick salt dip can cure it.

Was the discus alone?
Im not a discus expert by a long way, but dont they feel secure in groups? It probably did have the parasites but being alone, wouldnt that be a factor to its health?

 That's true, it's fine for a while if your treating an illness.
But not so good long term especially for a young fish.

Anita

Really sorry to hear your fish died. However it is a very good lesson for everyone reading this thread that you should not buy a sick fish unless you are confident you can treat it and you have the tank space to keep it once it's healthy.

Also note that the trip home could be too much for a sick discus and that they should not kept alone if it can be avoided.

I hope you learn from this experience and put more research into the fish you buy.

It could be internal parasites, but it could be that it was scared, being the only fish of it's kind in the tank. Discus do better in groups, since they are shy, nervous fish. Basically, safety in numbers. I would have to assume, that with no other discus in the tank, that if there was food present, it may have been too scared to venture out to eat it.

He wasnt eating at the lfs and there were 7 other discus in that tank!

Just seen this, sorry he didnt make it and I couldnt get any meds to you :(

Hate to say it but what you said above is exactly why I wouldn't have bought him, he does look very thin and he was probably ill when you got him
