i am going to start up a 55 gallon tank with yellow labs and i read that the ph should be 7.8-8.6 and was wondering what can i do to increase this from what comes from the sink? i have seen ph increasers and one malawi/victoria buffer which keeps the ph between 7.8-8.2. any suggestions to help bring my ph up?

have a look at the post "tap water" there is a bit about ph levels there

The coral is a good idea for a substrate it keeps it higher.. Also some limestone or coral rocks will work just as well.. Without these its hard because the chemicals dont keep the ph up for ever its just a pain.. Well first of all what is the ph from your tap to begin with? Anything above 7 is good but not ideal.
