ph level for a community tank am i write that it should be about 7 ???

Basically yes, but having it in practice can be difficult. A pH between 6-8 should not be a problem for most fish and many can even thrive outside this range the main thing is to try and keep the pH as steady as possible and most community tropical fish should be able to adapt.

One good bit of advice that i was given on here was to leave your PH well alone, and ask your local fish shop what their PH is. If its similar, which there is a good chance it is, then it may not be much of an issue either way if the fish are well and happy there!

It really depends on the fish but generally, peaceful community fish prefer neutral to slightly acidic (below 7.0) water but as already mentioned can adapt to a wide range of pHs.

thanks for the quick reply..

im not sure what my ph level is from the tap ! is on my list of things to do!!

I would suggest that you also test the KH (buffering capacity) of your tap water. A higher KH means that your pH will be less likely to change due to the effects such things as CO2 or driftwood, both of which can lower your pH. As a general rule (but definitely not always) water with a high pH will also have a high KH. It is also much easier to raise pH than it is to lower it but as Squid mentioned, it is best to leave it alone unless there is a really good reason to try to change it.

ive got a massive piece of driftwood it only just fits in my 85g
