Hi -

My pH level in my 55 gallon tank is at about 8.0. I have not added fish yet but I intend too possibly tonight. I am planning on starting with Guppies. Is this pH to high? If so, how can I bring this down without adding chemicals? (I bought some time ago something called Proper pH but it says you cannot use with live plants). I have two live plants.

Thanks :D - Jeannine

Your pH should be fine for guppies. The key thing is that it's stable. There are a few ways to lower it without chemicals but 2 of them will have only minimal effect as i would imagine your GH & KH are high. One being high doesn't necessarily mean the others will be but that is the norm. Adding driftwood to the tank or running peat in your filter are theones that probably hae little ffect. The other is more expensive but you can mix tap water (what is the pH from the tank?) and RO water, which has 0 GH & KH, to get the pH you desire. I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as it is stable.
