Hi all,I was just being a curious george and was wondering what ph do rams do best in.I have had no succuess and my h is above 7.6 Not 100% sure though.Thanks,Ben.

In a perfect world everyone who wanted to keep rams could, but it's not, and they cant. They are one of those fish that don't do well in all sorts of water. If your water is alkaline (above pH7) then the GH (general hardness) and TDS (total dissolved solids) will be high.Edit sorry this isn't true, they might be high. This means that there is a lot of heavy metals in your water and all sorts of stuff that rams cant tolerate. Couple this with high nitrates, which rams cant tolerate, made worse if your water isn't to their liking, and they dont last long i'm afraid. If you could keep the nitrates strictly under 10PPM you might do a little better and dont buy rams that come from Singapore, instead look for east European Czech or German. edit; keep the temperature up as well. 80-82F

This is good advice. First time I got a couple of blue rams, my 4ft community was being kept at around 24C/75F. It's winter in Australia so temps drop to about 23C early in the morning. Both rams died within 2 days. My tank is fully established, understocked and they were the first to die in 2 months since it got cycled. I went back to my LFS and they were happy to credit the 2 rams. I got myself 1 ram this time and some neons. Lifted my temp to 26-27C/79-80F and my ram's been with me for over a week now. She's very happy and always greeting me when I get home. She's always the first to poke at the glass when I'm there!
