Hi all

The cycle for my tank is almost done...... Ammonia gone and Nitrite on its way. I thought i would check the pH and i think they are a little high.

pH level is about 7.6
High range pH is about 7.8

Let me know if I'm right if i am i can do something about it before the fish go in.

Thanks once again......

Muzzy

It all depends on what fish you want, some like slightly acid ph others like an alkaline ph,

But to be honest unleesss you going to be keeping large chiclids, you don`t need to worry about the ph as most fish will happily adapt to a ph, just keep it some where between 6 and 8 and you`l be fine....

Ph swings are what you need to look outr for as they will cause your fish stress....

Oh cool!! thanks BigIan!! :good:

If your fishless cycling then your PH will be altered by the cycle. Take some water from your tap and put it in a cup. Let it sit overnight and test the PH. Next you should probably check the GH and KH to see if your tap water is going to be stable at that PH or if it's going to fluctuate. As said above a PH of 7.6 is not a big deal for most fish. With that in mind it is always a better idea to buy fish that are naturally happy in your PH range than to try to change your PH to suit a particular fish.

If you do want to change your PH then there are a few options.

UP
1.You can add baking soda not sure about the method for this but I don't think I like it. It might work fine but I get the feeling you'd have to add it each week or something...potentially causeing PH swings.

2. add a permanent buffer. This could be lot's of things... sea shells, certain types of rock, some kinds of sand Aragonite comes to mind, or coral.

DOWN
1. add peat to your filter

2. add certain types of wood to your tank
