I was in there 2 nights ago...brought a tear to my eys..the poor bettas can hardly move.. :-( :-( :-(

But you know that happens in every other store: Big Al's Aquarium Outlet, Walmart, ect
The fish may be crampt but not for long and it does not kill them right away. They live long enough to be bought, that's all that really matters. The store is not their perminant home. (Thank goodness)

At my lfs (not a chain store) the bettas are either in 1/2 gallon bowls or 1/4 gallon, not the best but they have room to move around and flare.

Yea, you are right, they should at least be in bowls large enough for them to flare and turn around in. Some times I notice Petsmart puts them in their planted tanks.

at the petsmart i work at, we have them in large cups, however, they are ALL sold (and im talking 500-1000 bettas) in less than 1 week, guarranteed. shipments are in on wednesdays... by the next monday or tuesday we have none left! dont worry... we dont like it either, but we give them ample de-stressing meds and dont overfeed. we love our bettas (at my store, anyhow...)

We were at the lfs yesterday to take some extra snails in. On the way out I heard the lfs lady (the owner, no less) tell someone "oh you can keep bettas in a coffee mug. They can live that way". ARGH!! If it hadn't been for the fact that we were on our way out and my kids were already partway to the car I would have gone back in and given her a few words. COFFEE MUG. I sincerely hope no one actually tries that. :(

you really have to wonder, in this age of "convenience" why such people even bother having a fish as a pet. i mean... how unintrusive and simple does it need to be?? that is just a little too much, really. and what would happen if they, one morning, sat down to breafast and accidentally grabbed the wrong mug?? i supposed they would deserve it! (but poor fishie!) i also hope no-one tries that either. how ridiculous! :S LOL.
