Pets At Home Advice

forums like this are good to educate folk befiore they go B)

Pets at Home at Redditch keep their fish very well. The tanks look well cared for and clean. I recently bought some plants from them and they are ok. I wouldn't ask for any advice though! I'd rather ask here. :)

Hi all I have a Pets at Home store near me and find it has good weeks and bad ones, I Purchased 5 Neons, 2 Guppys, 2 Chinese Loaches and 2 Platys one platy died after a couple of days it did act strange when i got him, still all the others are doing fine. I do realise now that I should have bought only a few at a time, to many causes a chemical unbalance something about to much poo in one go  The only reason I bought so many is the fish looked in good shape and the tanks where very clean, a week before they was like you have said, in I very poor state and since also. Still i have decided to start up a quarantine tank for new arrivals and keep eye on the cleanliness of Pet At Home tanks before buying anymore fish  Ivor

Hey, i work at a pets at home and i know a fair bit, you've gotta remember that not everyone is a fish expert and the people that do know about fish can't be looking after it all the time, like me, i get stuck on tills and stuff!

I'm sure most people try their best to look after them but it's not always easy to look after such a big system with so many tanks!

When I was getting my 55 gallon tank at a pet store I've never been to before as they were scanning the items I was getting I was telling them what fish I was putting in their and they said "you don't really have to put your common pleco in this 55g because they only grew to the size of their tank" then she said she had a 29g with livebears and a common pleco and she said anything she put in their turned aggressive and that her 2"-3" pleco was killing her fish that was bigger than it was. I wonder why, I bet this thing was full of fish and they were fighting for space. But I guess the worst advice I got was when I saw this awesome looking red male betta in a 20g full of bala sharks and I asked them if a betta would be ok with black widow tetras (even though I knew they weren't) they said yeah and asked if I wanted to buy the betta which I didn't. But I once saw what looked like a long 30g at a wal :cough: mart full of big goldfish and this one goldfish had a huge red open sore on it and the other goldfish were biting it and common plecos were sucking on it while it was still swimming around.

I also have a Pets at Home just up the road from me, and have to agree that they have 'off times' and 'okay times'. Quite often I have found that there are dead fish in their tanks, or fish with whitespot etc. However just recently they appear to have got their act together a little. I usually do go there for any fishy items i need and the other day fell in love with a female guppy they had, upon getting ready to bad it for me, the shop assistant did ask me how long I had had my tank set up for etc. which really surprised me as they have never asked before!! Then when i was there yesterday to get a starter two of them were doing water changes and testing the waters. So maybe just maybe they are aware of their growing bad reputation and are doing something about it :/
