Petco Responds To My Letter!

I have found that when you find a bad pet store it's usually the employees who are the main problem. I have heard some horror stories about petsmart but the one near my house is spectacular! The fish are all healthy, very few dead fish, properly housed, etc. But the one across town is a totally different story. Lots of disease/dead. etc. I'm really glad they took your letter seriously. Hopefully this will encourage them to do more indepth training of their employees! Good luck.

BTW the taking pictures in a few weeks is probably a good idea. If it's the employees instead of the company as a whole they really need to know.

So here's my response I sent yesturday:

Dear Scott,

I am truly appreciative that my concerns have been taken seriously and would be happy to meet with you at the store.
I hope that the aquatics department at the Farmington store will improve as a result of your fast response. Thank you!
I am available in the evenings, say around 5 pm on most weekdays.

to report back to their bosses saying that numerous bad things are happening with no physical proof wouldn't be clever. so probably not a good idea to take pics yourself, just make sure he does

I've worked in places that have a company structure like Petco. In fact, the manager of our local Petco was a coworker of mine at Ernst before they went under. If they know one of the upper ups is coming to town, the manager tells the employees and the employees naturally mop the place spotless before he ever sets foot in the front door. If I were you, I'd walk in there with a camera phone tomorrow, don't say squat to the employees & start shooting pics before you even set up the meeting with him.

The coworkers I've had in the past, and I as well were very good at making a store look like the shining company example within a day.

Just my $.02...feel free to disregard if you'd like.

Todd, I think this is a fantastic idea. When I have a meeting set up with the coordinator I'll go a few days beforehand and snap some shots (Hell, there's never an employee arounbd anyway. You practically has to stomp up and down the isles screaming for help at the top of your lungs to get someone over there.)
When I meet with the coordinator, He won't be able to brush me off and say, "See? everything's great now!" I can show him pics from beforehand to say -- "it looks good now, Yes, and thank you for this.... however These pictures have me wondering if the employees here are taking the matter seriously. (that's of course, if they just do a quick clean-up job for my visit with him)

I'll report back soon, guys.

Defenders of the Fishes UNITE!!

They feed them once a day, mixed fish

tattered fins, dead fish

surprisngly the wamart near me has some good stock
Whats wrong with them only feeding the fish once a day? I only feed my fish once a day and I'm sure hundreds of people on here only feed there fish once a day.

I agree with you shaddai, I bet this guy told them "that me and a customer will be here on whatever day and I want you all to scoop all the dead fish out and toss out the sick fish, and only put out the healthy looking fish in the sale tanks and clean the tanks up" just like what shaddai said but I would use a digital camera instead so you can get bigger and clearer pics so he can't say "well these pics are to small and to low of quality that it can't really prove anything".

Even if he doesn't direct the store manager to clean up, if the manager knows that HQ is showing up, they'll most likely do that anyway. My point behind taking pics early is this: don't let the employees make you look like a fool in front of Mr. Corporate with their impromptu clean job.

And if Mr. Corporate does tell the manager to muck the tanks out...then you've still got some proof of the real situation in spite of Mr. Corporate's wishes of covering it up.

Definetly use a real camera that can prove with good quality pictures. Also, if th employees give you any flack, just say you're doing a report for school on fish keeping. Always works.

 a job well done, to be sure!! You should be very proud of yourself

They feed them once a day
Oh God, the humanity. Anything but that.
As has been mentioned to you in another thread, there is absolutely nothing wrong with only feeding them once a day, or even fasting them for a couple of days. Mine only get fed once daily, and I promise they're not dropping dead or anything.

I think it's great that they respond!!

The walmart in the town i live in have betta fish, but they are disgusting, most are dead and they are in such little cups. I went to the store manager one afternoon and in front of everyone told him quite loudly how disgusted i am with how he is running the fish section, and that half are dead and/or sick, and that the water is filthy. People around looked at him in disgust and walked out of the store. I don't think they do anything about it though. I don't go to that section anymore. I can't bear to look..

However, there is a pet store in town called PetWorld, it is run by a family that lives in my town, and their fish tanks are so clean!!!!! All the fish tanks have fresh spotlesslessly clean water, the betta cups are much larger, and they change their water everyday!!! I also think there might be a breeder in my town because they sell crowntails, halfmoons and delta bettas there, as well as many females.

Their fish are always very healthy, and I have never seen any fish that has been sick there.

This letter to PetCo makes me want to write one to Walmart in my town, but I'm not sure how to put it to them.

As for the feeding the fish once a day, I do the same thing. Except for my betta who is over 3, he gets some blood worms at night.

Has anyone ever written to walmart before about their fish?
