Peta And Bettas

Youch... That's pretty sinister language... I can imagine that text being used in some horror film involving possessed children....

The area of the PETA website, for those who didn't look too closely, looks to be aimed at teenagers. There's the whole 'making it cool and hip' approach, and also the language style changing again.

A better campaign would explain proper betta husbandry, discourage buying from stores who do not properly care for bettas, and suggest buying from reputable breeders instead of supporting the mass breeding and "throw-away pet" mentality pushed by pet stores marketing bettas as decorations.

I agree with you, people need to be educated on how to take care of Betta's. I dont agree keeping Betta's in tanks/bowls without filtration or heating, but some people manage to keep them alive and happy.
Its the same thing with goldfish and keeping them in bowls.

peta2 is a site directed at teens. Compare:

I have a freind in PETA, but she doesn't nessasarily agree with everything they say. Because she has a betta also. Personally, I think some of this PETA stuff, expecailly this betta issue a bunch of bs.

IMO the idea of PETA is good but the people in it are a load of poo(most of them anyways) personally I agree that they will be in demand more if you buy them but its kind of a lose lose either way. You can leave this fish that you want to buy and make its life miserable and not do anything about demand because one betta isnt going to do anything or you could keep buying them and raise the demand. The stickers are stupid because they have no right to do that. They should be making people more aware of how to take care of them instead of trying to stop the selling of them because thats never going to work.

I'd agree about buying the bettas to save them just perpetuates the problem, but that's about where i'd stop.

Encouraging people to deface store property is just stupid, and I checked out their flickr site, people giving the finger to kfc stores. Yeah. That's gonna change the world.

And here I always thought PETA was People for the Eating of Tasty Animals!

There actually is a mock organization called People for the Eating of Tasty Animals.
Yes, infact they have a website devoted to peta bashing, but even they take it a little farther than i would.

I have respect for those of us who choose to not eat meat for the sole purpose of animal rights (as those animals are in fact brutally slaughtered), but when you pour fake blood all over a child leaveing the local KFC, you loose all credability.

As for bettas, their idea is plain stupid, and i think if you want a betta, get it, if not leave it. i understand how awful those conditions are, and i know that by createing demand, i provoke the business to provide, but as long as theres a little asian guy breeding millions of these fish so he can make a dime, so he can feed his family, i dont think the opinion of one, or even a million is going to make any sort of differance.

PETA is akin to any other cult organization. Anyone who gives them any type of financial support whatsoever is just wasting their money; it isn't going to helping animals, it's going to creating snappy ad campaigns that, in the end, have little influece because a good number of the general public are already well aware that PETA is frothing-at-the-mouth insane, and they therefor have no credibility no matter how snappy and attention-getting their campaigns are. On top of it all, they are hypocritical and have been known to give financial support to domestic terrorist groups like the Animal Liberation Front. Everything is all fun and laughs when they're just releasing animals from vivisection labs, but then comes the vandalism and firebombings.

Hi all, someone said earlier maybe if we stop buying from stores that dont house them properly. Well unless you go into the back room of the petstore you dont know how they house the Bettas. The pet store close to me for instance Houses bettas the display bettas in 1 L of water but the ones the customers dont see are in LITTLE cups!

But do they not realize, that by having people rescue these bettas in the cups, we are giving them a better home? I mean, if everyone boycotted them, all those fish would just die. so they would rather have the mass death of thousands of bettas, rather than havign people try to save them?

Sounds stupid to me.

I remember reading about some animal liberation group (not the same one spoken of above) that would kidnap dogs from peopel's homes who THEY thought were being mistreated. I remember reading one about a woman who everyday drove by a dog tied to the tree in the front yard. They deicded this wasn't nice and they kidnapped the dog. Turns out, it was a family pet, and the dog was only put outside there tied to the tree so it could be outside for a while, while the owners got ready for work, school etc. And these peopel took it upon themselves to steal this dog. Some people are just nuts.

It really makes you wonder just how far these people will go.

there are so many aggressive animal-rights protesters, ALF, SPEAK, PETA, SHAC, SARC...the list goes on. i get where they're coming from, but burning out a bankers car because the company he works for paid some money to an animal lab...once...is going too far.

they should concentrate more on improving the welfare of animals and less on the media stunts and all round aggression towards people.

Personally, I don't see what this sticker act will do. The employees can take off the stickers you know...

Hey now, those stickers are darn hard to get off! They always tear and leave paper behind...

I know, but all the store would really have to do is put another sticker over it.
