Pet Shop ,we Won`t Name

Hi all ,just phoned up one branch of pets at home and asked if they had any shrimps in stock ,her reply was "we don`t stock them anymore ,they kept going missing in the tank,"she said "she just assumed the fish kept eating them ,so they`ve stopped ordering them "
So phoned up another branch, "yes," she said "we`ve got them in ","how big do they get, "i asked ,"as i only have a 28l tank"
"About 1 inch, one will be alright with your fish ",as i`d told her what fish i `d had already, [4 glowlight tetra,and 2 corries],i said that i`ve been advised to get 2 as otherwise it would hide if on it`s own,she then said 2 would be fine."By the way," i said "what are they called,?"she said they`re see through ,"are they armano shrimps ?"i said " i don`t know we just know them as freshwater shrimps she replied !!!!

The phrase "jack of all trades, master of none" applies to the majority of pah staff. Before our fish system got refitted we used to find shrimp in a lot of our tanks. As far as I am aware Amanos are the only type of shrimp our supplier supplies.

I hate to bring negativity to this forum and I apologise if this causes offence, but whats the point of this thread other than to have a pop at pah?

If you want knowledgeable staff who know about fish and related stock then don't go to a pet supermarket.

These types of shops can easily be knocked but what do you expect?
The staff are no doubt expected to have some knowledge of all the animals and associated items they sell, having staff that are trained directly in each niche part of the pet trade would require more staff and no doubt higher costs, thats not a pet supermarkets angle on the trade.

I know this forum dont like this sort of thing so this threads going nowhere. But only naming shaming and avoiding bad shops will either make them improve or go out of business and both results will improve fish welfare. Fish deserve better treatment!

Yes, but PAH has some fantastic stores and some not so good stores, it's a franchise so the above idea wont work, at the end of the day everything in this life is about money, people need jobs and exploiting fish in some cases is a way of providing these jobs, only a small percentage of those who buy from PAH will know how to treat fish properly, some don't care if said member of staff doesn't know a certain fact, we're only human! People will never stop buying supplies and pets from these stores so any attempt to boycott them wont work.

Contacting managers / head offices and complaining about poor knowledge would do a lot more for fish welfare compared to just avoiding the store altogether.

The problem with naming & shaming is when the large chain/corporation sees something similar to this, and contacts the forum owner/admin asking to remove the topic or face legal proceedings for libel & such.
