Might have asked this question before, but i cant find it in my Topics.

I really want a clownfish for my 65L tank. The LFS has Percula Clownfish. Im guessing these are the 'Common' and 'True Percula' clownfish. These are the smallest ones, right?

So i have a few questions;-
1.) Will 1 Clown Fish host
2.) Will it be happy? (might have a small gobie or Blenny as a friend)
2.) When i upgrade, will it be difficult buying 'it' a mate? Will they get along?

Thanks :)

65 litres isn't big enough for a clown IMO

1 clown will host.
It will be happy on its own but they prefer to be in pairs.
If you keep one it will develop into a female and it will be difficult to get it to accept a new male, so it's better to add 2 at the beginning.

huh? Even 1? I know a few people with 2 clowns in tanks less than 65L.
And i just read in a few places 1 clown needs 10G?

im confused... :/

Ah,ok! :)

Anyone else want to give thier opinion on tank size for a clown fish? Im reading mixed views.

Clown fish are very active and territorial, your looking at 100+ litres for a pair of clowns IMO, I'm sure others will agree, once you've kept them you will see why, they're very active fish.

I started with one in a ten gallon. He seemed to do fine but in hindsight he was not happy. I now have three in a 29 gallon and they are very happy. There is a big difference.

Most of you know my views on this but for betta:

I believe you shouldn't keep a pair of clowns in anything less than 125 litres. However saying that many others believe they can live happily in 95. The old saying goes that clowns once hosted tend not to stray more than 20cm away from their host, so a tank slightly bigger is fine - however imo this is not true, yes they do spend most of their time with their host but they do also swim around the whole tank (and mine is five foot).

I'll throw in my opinion as well since it differs from most here. I believe that a 20g (about 76L) is fine for a pair of the smaller clowns, regardless your tank is still below my minimum :p

And I agree with the others on having just one. They're much happier (And interesting!) with another clownfish. Once they turn female, they can be quite difficult to pair up with although the smaller species (true percs and ocellaris in particular) seem to be a little easier especially if they're tank bred ;)
Perhaps a larger tank is in order :hey:

Funnily enough, mine are the stereotypical clowns it seems. If I ever saw those fish go to the opposite side of the tank... it'd be a miracle. I don't think the male is "allowed" to go over there anyways.

Thank you for all the responses! :good:

This is whats confusing -_-

I've just joint up another Marine forum to get varied opinions and they said my tank size is fine about 5 people repied;- with one saying its the min. but bigger is better

:/

@-Nemo- I am going to get a bigger tank soon, but i thought i should start with this one then progress. And there is no way of doing that at present as it will be hard to flog this tank. :)

Yep, the opinions in this hobby vary more than in any other as I see it..
My work sells a 10g (38L) "Nemo" Set-up which is completely too small IMO, but my manager, who knows more about this hobby than anyone else I know, sees it as completely fine. Therefore, you have to form your own opinions from your own experiences sometimes.

Yes, like my LFS display tank, they have 2 in an Orca 450.
