I bought 5 pepper corys all from the same place at the same time. They have been in quarantine with a few other fish for about 2 weeks now. Yesterday I lost one. Just Now I lost another. I never see them die so I don't know how they act. I had 4 peppers around 6 now only 3 left. I am checking on them frequently. They all seem fine. All have been eating fine. Could the wrong type of food kill them. I sometimes feed them crushed cichlids pellets. They seem to love them. I also feed the algae wafers and shrimp pellets.

I have 3 Julii corys in there too they seem fine. I looked at the body of the dead fish. No sign of anything funky no ich, fungus, or dropsy They look good. This one that died had a nipped tail that's it.

Water Is all good. Its a bare bottom tank. I have been doing small 10% daily water changes so no poop is left to mess the water because the tank is a bit over stocked. It's only a 10 gal holding tank.

6 1"red eye tetras
now 3 Pepper corys Started with 5. All 1"
3 julii corys Also 1"

Temp is 76 F
PH 7.2
ammonia 0
nitrites 0
nitrates 10

That's what the water reads today and yesterday before water changes.

Could the red eyes be stressing them out? Yet they have places to hide. I never see the red eyes pick on them.
Or just a batch of sick fish.

I'm going to keep all fish in quarantine for a month before I move any to the 55 gal.

Why are they dropping like flys? Any ideas? I thought maybe lack of O2 so I lowered the water so the filter water splashes. Maybe I need a air pump. But the water changes help put O2 back in the water.

I'm getting worried.

I just posted this in the cory section too but then thought it might be better asked here.

How long did you climatise the new corys for.
Do they act listless and lethagic.
Do they look pale or darker in colour.
What do the barbels look like. Do they look short and thin.
What does it look like when the go to the toilet.
Do they look bloated or thin.
Can they maintain balance in the water.
Are the corys leaning to oneside or resting on things.

The cory cats were fine till I added the red eye tetras. One of the red eyes has a large tummy. The cory cats are going to the surface a lot. The gills are kind of more red then I think they should be. I started treating with maracyn for bacterial diseases.

So glad I kept them in the holding tank. The red eyes have only been in the tank a week. The poor peppers have been in over 2 weeks. I know I should not have added more fish but I thought all was good.

Oh well. No one died today so let's see.

We got some Albino Corydorus and 2 out of the 4 started to get very listless and sit on the bottom for hours without moving. When one of them died we went to our LFS for advice and as there were not symptoms other than the listlessness (as there was no external sighs on the dead fish) they suggested that it could have been an internal bacterial infection. We bought some Anti Internal Bacteria meds and applied to the tank and the 2nd of the two listless fish picked up and he/she is happily swimming lengths now.

Red inflamed gills can be bad water quality, bacterial gill rot, gill flukes.
Being bloated can be constipation, swim bladder, dropsy, internal parasites.

If no signs of flicking and rubbing or excess mucas, I would take the bacterial route.
What do you feed the fish?
Can the tetra maintain balance in the water.
For bloating. Epson salt baths.

Yes the fish all are fine and swim well. No Flashing or mucus. They get Algae wafers, sinking pellets, shrimp pellets.

I got some Maracyn2 also. I am going to do a large waterchange and add them both. I have used this stuff before it's been great. So fingers crossed.

Ok. Good Luck.
Let us all know how they get on.

Bad news I only have 2 corys left put of 7. My red eye tetras are all fine eating and swimming around fine and happy. My poor. Corys are not eatting any more. What the heck is going on. Ian still treating the tank and doing 30% daily water change before every redose. My heater did die yesterday so the temp went to 63F but that's fixed and it's 75f again.

One cory is out swimming around looking for food. I think adding the red eyes added stress to the corys and that weakened them. Or they were sick fish to start with. Ahhhh it's so frusterating.

Did the temp drop fast.

No it slowly went down and natural at night. Because it's summer and finally got warm the temp was at 70 F it just dropped at night. I have another heater in it now and all is good with that.

I'm so fed up with these corys. I feel like I'm just waiting for the to all die. One floats at the top during the day. The others just sit around on the bottom moving from time to time. Only one of the corys got really skinny and her eyes sunk in. It was awful all the others have looked healthy when dead. Only one started to look sick.

I thought one was dead today went to take it out and it moved. It was up side down. Now its right side up. One of these guys must have been sick when I added him. It's been about 17 days of quarantine. Oh I miss counted I still have 4. 3 peppered and 1 julii. All were looking ok just now. But not very active. These fish are freaks.

it could be bacterial to internal parasites.

Do the fish go skinny due to not eating. Sunken in eyes can be bacterial to internal parasites.
What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.
Check there anus to see if its enlarged or red and inflamed.

I'm pretty sure the fish I have left will make it. Today was the end of treatment no one is dead. The fish I have left seem pretty happy. I have 2 peppers 1 julii. All my red eye tetras are fine none of them died. Safe to say it was a bacteira infection.

Are the fish back to full health.
Can you do another round of meds. As sometimes they suggest a second round of treatment

I was thinking of doing another round I still might. I'm going to feed them tonight after work watch to see how they are. Then do a large water change and take it from there. The red eyes are hardy little buggers.

Ok.
Good Luck.
