Hi,

I got 2 new peppered cory and I now have 8 of them. I have been observing the 2 new additions and one of the cory seems to spend 50% of his time at the surface getting air and the other 50% doing what the rest do. Now I have 7 Panda corys and 8 peppered corys and he is the only one doing this. I get them all nipping up for a gulp of air now and then and thats normal but the one is spending a few mins at a time gulping away and then he swims off.

Stats

Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = aprox 10

Any ideas what the problem is?

Sounds like it could be stressed. What temp is your tank and also the PH? Peppered corys require quite a low temperature! Other than that.. I'm not sure :unsure: as he is the only one doing this.. Is the surface of your water being agitated? Maybe he has gill damage from poor care at the LFS you got him from. :huh:

How many gallons or litres is the tank.
How many fish and which type.
What test kit are you using.
How long did you climatise the new fish for.
Is there plenty of aeration in the tank.

What do the fish gills look like. Do they look pale with excess mucas or red and inflamed.
Does he look bloated or thin.
Any red sores or steaking on his body.
Does he look pale or darker in colour.
Does he act listless and lethagic.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.

The temp is about 23 degrees just now and PH is about 7.4. Its 125 Litre and i'm using the API Master Kit. I have 2 filters (Fluval 2+ and 3+) in the tank agitating the surface and a dual water pump is being used aswell.

I've looked at him and he seems perfectly healthy. I actually thought it may have been the other one i was gonna have problems with as he was alittle lighter than the rest but he has settled in fine. they were climatised for 1 hour and every 15 mins added the aquarium water as I normally do. I did see him do it in the bag but I was putting it down to low oxygen in the bag.

I've not witnessed any flicking and there is nothing I can see on his body. he is on the smaller side but other than that he looks like my others.

There is 8 Peppered Corys 7 Panda Corys and 10 Neon Tetra and everyone else is fine its just this little guy.

i'm gonna feed them later and I might do a little water change later as i'm due to do 1 tomorrow.

Any help is great!

Thanks

He's not right if he spending alot of the time at the top of the tank.

Corys are very prone to bacterial infections.
Is he gasping at the top of the tank.

yeah he is coming up every 2 to 5 mins or so and gulping for about 30sec to 1 min and swimming off. I really cant see anything different with him except he is smaller. lights are off and the temp is stable and nobody is stressing him so i'm puzzled!

thanks for ur help!

Ok.
There not really enough to go on to point it towards anything.
it could be bacterial but not to sure. If any changes get back to the board.

I recently bought some peppers,and they spent more time near the top and appeared to float around the tank,i took them back to the lfs has i wasn't happy with them.

I hope your cory will be ok.

Right well i've been watching them all this morning and there seems to be something new. The cory in question (i think its him cos the 2 new ones look the same as they are alot smaller than my others) hoovers the glass but all of a sudden he will stop and for about 20-30 seconds he kind of just floats about and then he kicks back in and goes about his business of hooving the glass or getting air.

Any new suggestions?

It now looks like both of them are doing the floating thing but the other one is trying to sit on the bottom but keeps floating away and I can see he is trying to find a way to just stay still. Its not the current as all the other corys are at this moment sitting in the cave or sitting on the bottom.

I thought swim bladder but i'm concerned this is going to spread to the others!

Were the corys caught roughly.

Issolate and try a bacterial med. Feed some shelled peas.
