Penguin Wheel Filters

The Water was getting somewhat dirty in my tank,and all I had was a Top Fin 13 dollar 10 gallon filter,the guy at Pets Mart recommended a Penguin Wheel Filter. I bought one,and it seems to work real well. Did I do a wise thing? Are they better than regular filters?

i have one of those on my 10 gallon tank and LOVE it. IMO i think that you made the right choise.

I like them for the increased, highly oxygenated surface area for the benificial bacteria to grow on. I've had one for years and have just bought two new systems for some of my other tanks. I'm stuck using an UGF in a twenty, tall tank in one of the classrooms that I take care of and stock. The tank is not mine and the filter, powerhead and air pump all came with it. I don't feel like setting it up out of my own pocket other then stocking it with babies and overflow from other tanks. In a way it's a good thing that I vacate that tank when school is off for the summer as it gives me a chance to give it a real cleaning and start a fresh in the fall. The fish get adopted out at school end except for perhaps a few favorite.

If you're talking about one of the hang-on-side filters that takes a 'biowheel' and also a square/rectangle filter cartridge, then yeah those things rock!! They are better than ones without wheels, because you will never get rid of that wheel. That means you'll never have to throw away your beneficial bacteria! As you may or may not know, most of that beneficial bacteria lives in your filter... if you have a filter that takes 1 cartridge, and you throw it away...... well there your biological filtration goes with it!

I guess in an established tank theres still some in the gravel, but this is not a good strategy to rely on that.

Great Choice. I did the same thing. I had a brand new top fin 10g filter from pet smart. I went and bought the penguin mini for my 10g and started a 5.5g with my top fin. Love the penguin. I also love my emperor for my 29g.
