What peat do you use to soften water, i asked at my lfs and they didn't know what i was on about, probably didn't explain myself very well. Can i use any garden peat or is it aquatic stuff
Thanks Angel

I use terrarium peat as a substrate. If you look in my avatar you will see it. I bought it at my LFS. I also have a bag of it in the filter in a tight-knit bag.

However i would suggest using an Ion-Exchange resin pillow, little white pack available at Pets at Home "Water softening Pillow", these work ok, but rain water is the best source of softwater, however i would always run it through carbon for a few days.

Steam the peat to kill parasites.

Make absolutely certain that is is 100% pure sphagnum peat with no additives. You can obtain it at garden centres but beware that some peat contains fertilizers and other additives for growing plants. Read the labels carefully.
