I tend to get lazy when it comes to changing the mixture on my DIY CO2 thingy. Today there were virtually no bubbles coming of the airstone....so I changed it....this time adding bicarb soda to the mix as well.....within half hour it was bubbling nicely....YAY.

I got home from work tonight after the light has been on for 10 hours and saw that my ambulia was pearling, as was my blue stricta, Hygrophila (sp. unknown), Cabomba and Hygrophila difformis. the tank looked like a bubble factory there was so much pearling...

Suffice it to say I was pretty excited....

Just wanted to share. The BF doesn't understand my excitement!!

I've got to ask, cos I keep seeing people talking about pearling....what is it?

Thanks,
Sam

It's the plants producing visible oxygen bubbles via photosynthesis. In ideal conditions (light, co2 and other nutrients) most plants will pearl. A lot of people experience pearling after a water change as there is a lot of CO2 in the new tap water. Most of my plants pearl after a couple hours of lighting.

Why is it we get this question almost every week?

There are so many threads which contain VERY IMPORTANT info in MANY forums, but yet nothing is pinned. But when someone announces a TTF meeting at such and such a place, it get's pinned easily, so I can see it's not a tedious process to pin something. Noone has to make a new thread or anything, just pin the ones that already contain the info.

That is prolly my only complaint about TTF. Many older/experienced members will get bored of posting the same info over and over again, and then, what will happen? How will the newbies get to know what pearling is? Or what is the best K range to grow plants? Or how to go through making your DIY CO2. There has to be at least 5 threads on that, but yet people still ask how to do so.

Can someone do something about this? Or better yet, explain why it's so hard to pin a thread. I don't want to come off sounding grumpy or anything, or accuse the mods of not doing their jobs properly, but this is something that really has been getting on my nerves lately, especially when the solution is so easy...

I now feel really bad for posting, but I have to say the search engine on this forum is rubbish. It seems you can only search for one word.

Sorry for asking something that has already been answered.

Like I said, it's not your fault. I'm sorry if I came off sounding like that. But you'll see this in every forum. How can the DIY forum just have 1 pinned topic? I can think up of 2 or 3 more that can be added, DIY CO2 just to name one... Oh yea, cold cathode lighting and LED moon lighting are another. There are two seperate threads on this, each several pages long, and they contain EVERYTHING you need to enjoy your fish after the normal lights are off. (info. wise that is....)

Don't think the search engine is that bad... Did you click on show posts from "Any dates"? That usually helps a lot. Inputing the member's name is also a very good idea, if you know who you're looking for that is...

hey no probs. I understand what you are saying about the pinned topics. I've found the ones that do exist really helpful.

As for the search. I don't get why you cant search for more than one word. I like to do searches using AND and OR operators to help find what I'm really looking for.

Anyway, we're a bit off topic now :)

Thanks for the answer gf225.

Well, I agree with you DM. I think planted tanks gets neglected. Do you see how many pins there are in for instance, bettas? Why can't we have that! :grr: :S
So anyways.
Angry Platy, what is your mixture and setup with the co2? (including the baking soda) I'm trying to figuire out my setup.

Congrats on the pearling!

I found my anubias nana pearling yesterday for the first time (that Ive noticed, anyway)....

woot! And without Co2 added and only 20W lights :dunno:

Then again, I just moved my fish tank and did about a 50% h20 change....

Just curious, what is your formula for the DIY CO2, how much bicarb soda are you adding?
I'm not sure who you were asking but I'll give you the recipe that has worked great for me. First disolve 2 cups of sugar in about 1.5 liters of water. Then add 1/2 teaspoon of yeast to a small cup of warm water and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Then pour the warm yeast mixture into the bottle with the sugar and whala!! I hear lots of people saying that adding baking soda helps out but ive never tried and I don't think it is necessary.

i just saw my amazon swords pearling two days ago for the first time.....this was after changing one of my bulbs from a 6500k to 2700k, re-setting up my CO2 system which hasnt been running for 4 or 5 months because i was informed that it would make absolutely no difference when having 2 WPGs a few months back, and adding a tablespoon of liquid fertilizer within the same week.....

def. an exciting moment!
