Hello all

From other posts on the forums, I think that I have 'pearling' (minute oxygen bubbles) in my tank.

While I appreciate that it is harmless to the fish, it is very unsightly.

What is causing it and how can I stop it? Any advise would be helpful.

TIA

tht usally means u have either done a recent water change or its a new tank usally jst wait the fish will move them or the filter will eithway thy are harmless anither point if thy r on glass jst wipe with yer hand

hope tht helps

pearling refers to plants letting off O2... its a good thing.

Is that what you mean?

Most people in the planted section would give anything to have pearling occur in their tanks, i know i would :p
It is a good thing to happen and means you've got the tank set up well. The right balance of light, CO2 and fertilzers. I think if you stop/lower any one of those then the pearling will probably stop. But then you have a greater risk of having algae

Are you certain it's pearling? Do you inject CO2, have plenty of light (>2wpg), dose ferts?

If so and you're sure you want to stop it then reduce your lighting intensity and reduce the photoperiod to 8 hours. This will stop the pearling with minimal risk of algae (healthy plant growth = less algae).

I like pearling.

yer it des look realli nice i wish my planted tank did tht but oh well the tank is new so i can focus on tht whn it has cycled lol

Thank you for the input peeps but.....

My tank isn't planted :S

I have just spent a good 15 minutes double checking that they are tiny air bubbles and am confident that they are.
The tank has been set up since December last year. Its a Juwel 80 with standard Juwel internal filter. The bubbles have always been there. They don't stick to the glass but drift around with the current and eventually float to the surface.

I have recently (2 weeks) fitted a TetraTec EX 1200 external filter to the tank so as to cycle it in preperation for fitting to my new 85 gallon in a few weeks time. While making a marked difference to the water clarity, the bubbles are still there.

I do have a problem with algae but haven't bothered too much with it over the last few weeks (apart from keeping the glass clean) as I will be doing a complete strip and clean once the new tank is setup.

Could algae be a cause?

TIA

p.s. please don't ask for stats as I don't have a test kit as yet

um, does the water kinda pour into the tank from an elevation and make a lot of splashy noises? 'cause i bet that the reason you've got bubbles like that is just turbulence

The new TetraTec does 'drop' into the tank but the bubbles have always been there.

I suppose the outlet from the internel filter could be the problem tho it is level with the top of the water and certainly doesn't create a turbulence.

Anyway, a complete strip down beckons shortly.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
