Yes they are absolutely lovely fish and get along with most others. You do have to avoid keeping them with things that nip though. Because of the size of your tank, I'd go for maybe 6 - 2 males, 4 females. They work well in small groups like this. ALternatively, a trio would work fine as well.
Do you mean hatchetfish? If so, I would say that pearls are one of the few top-dwelling gouramies that I actualy would keep with hatchets. Normaly it's not a good idea because hatchets stay at the very top layers and many gouramies bully them but I've never had issues with pearls as long as the tank's big enough (which yours is). Again, if you have nippy fish, you should avoid hatchetfish as well.
BTW, I've assumed you don't have any other gouramies - it might be an important consideration if you do.
They are beautiful!!! I want some!! how many do I need? 1 male and 2 females? will they get along with most fish? what about hatch fish? it is a 72 gallon tank..
