hello... i am busy working on a 125x40x40cm tank and i want to keep pearl gourami's. i have been trying to find some info on the web about holding more than one pair, but i can not find so much about it. i would like to hold six of them. i have been reading that two male and four female is no problem is this treu or can i better hold five female and one male?? who has keept the pearl in groups so you can give me some information about this... please help me... thanks...

How many gallons (or litres if you preffer) would your tank hold and will it be planted heavily/have floating plants?

If your tank is large enough, several males would be fine together. In my experience, these fish are one of the most peaceful gouramies and it is very rarely that you come across an aggressive male. The males do like to set up a territory in amongst floating plants or plants growing near the surface and these fish do get to a good size (up to 5" usualy) so a spacious tank, not over-stocked and with a large-ish footprint (thereforesurface area) is reccomended.

I would say the ratio of females to males isn't as important in pearls but I generaly suggest 2 females to every male. If you want 6, 2 males and 4 females would work fine. Occasionaly you'll find an overly-aggressive male but switching this fish for another male and re-arranging the tank a little should solve this problem permanently.

Again though, the tank needs to be quite large - 6 adult pearls (regardless of sex) need around 40 gallons to be comfortable - especialy if your plan is for a community set-up in which case you don't want to over-stock or over-crowd.

thank you for your response sylvia.

i am from europe so i dont know about gallons but my tank is 200 liters (ps. how many liters is a gallon?) this week i am going to start with planting my tank and i want to put in many plants so they can hide if they want. i also orderd floatingplants.

i dont want to put in many fish. i was thinking of 6 corydorus swartzi, 4 otocinclus flexilis for on the bottom, 10 rasbora heteromorpha and an other kind of fish the swims in a group that dont grow big. but it will take a few weeks before i start with putting fish in.

do you have other tips for me while i am working on my tank?

greeting lorenzo.

There's about 4 litres in every (US) gallon. That makes your tank around 50 gallons and that should be fine for 6 pearls.

The other fish you are considering should also be fine - the cories, the otos and the rasboras. However, you'd then be at the limmit.

It sounds to me like you've got everything under control but feel free to ask if you have any more questions :) There's always someone willing to help. Good luck and keep us updated!

my biggest worry was the amount of pearls that my tank could hold but i know now... thank you for the info and i will keep you updated about my tank!!!

greetings from me!
