nitrate:10
kH:-
gH:-
tank temp:25c

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): swimming erraticly (sp) around the tank. absess looking mark on the side of thie fish. on the opposide side it looks as if there are worms coming through its skin. only noticed the fish today as i was replanting the tank. painfully thin with mis-shapen belly. everybody else looks fine but these red wormy things are bothering me because 1 they look really very very painful and 2 they look to be contagious. but i have never seen them before

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 1/4 every 2 weeks. sometimes more frequent depending on time

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: nothing out of the ordinary. only chemical that ever goes in is dechlorinator

Tank inhabitants: bulldog plec, platy trio, 5 pearls, 5 cardinals, 5 harlequins, 3 cory, 1 lazy fighter

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): just todays plants. everything else is a longstanding inhabitant/ decoration. all resident for around 2 to 8 months

Exposure to chemicals: none

Digital photo (include if possible): sorry, have no idea how to do this

Camallanous worms are red when they have been feeding on the host.
Is there a complete hole in the fish so the worms are coming out.
Painfully thin is a sign of internal parasites.
The fish is in a bad way, internal parasites do a lot of damage to the internal organs resulting in bacterial infections.
It might be kinder to put the fish out of its misery, as once the fish are really skinny the parasite has done the damage and a med is to late.
You will still need to treat the whole tank for internal parasites to save the rest of the fish in the tank.

is there a treatment that you could reccomend for them that is available in the UK? i just found a thread from a while back about it. there is not a complete hole. its more like they are kinda latched on to him. poor thing.

thank for your fast response too

thank you. ill phone the vet tomorrow and try and see if i can get some of that stuff.

thanks a lot again

:flowers:

Good luck.
But I don't hold out much hope for the fish that's in a bad way.

Camallanous Worms is what this sounds like, and as Wilder said, deff not Anchor Worm. Levamisole hydrochloride is a very effective treatment in the early stages, but this does sound quite advanced. The worm almost consumes the fish at quite a rate, but also, by keeping it in the main tank, you do run the risk of infecting other tankmates by them eating the poo like exrement that will eventually settle on the substrate A physical examination of the fish is needed to see how advanced the condition is, so get to the vet ASAP. .....Okay, I know I sound like a vet, because I am a vet....but as a person I think your fish is doomed. BUT PLEASE Qtank ASAP.

im not holding out much hope for him anyways. i would like to treat the others as a precaution really. will an average vets clinic have what im looking for or will i need a specialist?

doomed is a great way to put it. i noticed it in one of the platys also i think on closer inspection. she has a small blood red thread, perhaps only about 2mm long protruding from her backside.

just an update. been to the vets this morning and they had no idea. they said bacterial or fungal infection. i said its not that, but i want some levamisole hydrochloride because its been recommended. there are obvious worms in the platys back side now so i need some of that. so they are ordering me the sheep dip to pick up tomorrow. hehe

hope it works. 'danny' the danio is still going strong. he must be a fighter!

I used some 'Levacide' last week> it has worked a treat so far...cleared away in 24hrs.

I cleaned out 50% water 24 hrs later and followed up with another dose 7 days later.

Mine went off food for a little bit, but are fine now.

Hope it works for you also... :good:

Good luck.
Wish vets would learn more about fish.

me too because if i hadnt checked out what it was first then i couldve been fobbed off with some bacterial meds!!

she pretty much just accepted what i said because i knew more than she did. she wanted to swab him for infection. i was like heeellllooooo, big red worm sticking outta the fish? starting treatment this aft so everyone has had a big feed this morning cos i read about them going off their food.

hope it goes well!!

Parasites can cause bacterial infections, but you need to get rid of the parasite first.
Good luck with the med.

sorry to keep this going. just need more advice. picked up the treatment from the vet. its 7.5% w/v and the dose recommended in the book she had was 1ml per 7.5l of aquarium water = a treatment of 17ml.
is this usual? is it enough?
she didnt really know but had rang a lab for me today to find out but i just wanted to check and see if any one had used this strength before.

thanks
