Hey havnt been for a while, have been pretty busy, but anyways ....................
i just recently got 2 gouramis and i always thought they were very peaceful fish (i have kept gouramis many years) but the smaller one is picking on the larger one, is this because its male? and how can i get him to give up with out separating them?

Thank you, kind regards

Vamp

what sort of gourami is it?
males do get more agressive than females.

Ones and opaline and the other is the gold kind, cant remember the correct name. they seem o have calmed down, a few nips missing out of theyr tails, but they are both fine. may have just been a territorial thing.

They are both the same species of fish, one being a blue variety and the other a gold variety. They are pretty territorial for gouramis and if you have two males they will probably fight as they mature. The males have a longer more pointed dorsal (top) fin. The females will be shorter and more rounded.
Having lots of plants in the tank can help but you just have to watch them. If they do too much damage then they will need to be separated.

hi, my experiences with keeping two males toghether have been good so far i bought my two male dwarf gouramis about 6 months ago and they are been fine toghether but they do have plenty of room to swim around places to hide and plants to hide behind, so has long as your tank is big enough and they have plenty of places to hide then i would hope that they would settle down, mine have there own territory and seem to be fine, best of luck

hi, thank you for your replys,
they have plenty of room and lots of plant coverage, by looking at the dorsal the gold looks to be male n the blue female, he might just have a fancy for her. i put my other in (white one) after quarantine (wich i think is female) n things have settled down abit more.

Personally I don't see the point of having two males (in order that they're visible) if they're going to be hiding all the time. No question that gourami's need decent well planted tanks, but if you're going to the extent you're making a heavily planted tank so that they can hide, why not just stick with a well planted tank and one male?

And with a decent black background, the females don't look half bad in my opinion.

it is a well planted tank and they dont hide all the time, they are actualy very friendly, one just kept picking on the other. but now that the third is in there he doesnt seem interested anymore.

Hi everyone, I'm quite new to tropical fish keeping and got my first fish 3 weeks ago. I decided on 6 pristilla tetras and 3 red honey gourami's 1 male 2 female.

The male was always chasing after 1 of the females and unfortunately 4 days ago she died. There were no marks on her as if she had been attacked and I only ever witnessed him chasing her, never nipping. Since she went to the big fish tank in the sky I have been worried about the remaining female being harassed but up until now she seems ok. He does chase her but not to the extent of the last female.

Is it ok to just leave 1 male and 1 female together? What would you knowledgeable people suggest? Any help would be much appreciated as I'm still very new to this.

Thanks :good:

The idea of the plants is not so much that they can hide, but establish a territory. It is like with boundaries, they use plants to delimit their area, not so much to hide in. That is, when your tank is big enough for 2 fish.
