I've had my tank running for a couple of months now but I've got a constant problem of very small (but visible) particles in the water. Is there any way of getting rid of this and what causes it.

I've got a 100g tank with fine gravel substrate and lots of potted plants. Filter wise, I've got two Rena XP3s and a TetratecX700 running on the tank, as well as a UV sterlizer. I've just put some Purigen in the two Renas and some filter floss (in the last filter tray). Also got usual foams and ceramic rings in the filters.

When I first had the tank, I had loads of green algae/brown algae on the glass but that seems to have cleared up recently.

Should I just give it time or is there something I can do to get rid of the particles. For example, should the filter floss be in the first media tray in each filter, as opposed to the last?

I've also got a 50g tank which has got a Fluval 105 and a Fluval internal running on it with similar media (but no Purigen) and the water is crystal clear in that tank. That tank has got gravel substrate but no plants. Could it be the plants that are causing the particles?

Hi, can you post a pic so we can see the particles? Might help with diagnosis. :good:

I'll try but not sure I'll manage to get pics for a while. its small white/yellowy particulars

The one thing I did notice the other day is that the Rena filter I got with the tank seems to have got stuff collecting in tubing(like a kettle gets after awhile). Whenever I clean out the filter and turn it back on, the filter outlet pipe spits out this stuff. Really not sure why its happening on this filter but not the others, esp as this filter (and tubing) is only a couple of months old.

this could be part of the problem. Have you tried completely disassembling the filter then cleaning all the particles out in a bucket?

You could use a fine filter sponge to clear up the particles.
