Just wondering if anyone had heard of or seen a Jellybean X Black Convict mix. Would the fry still be considered a Jellybean since Convict has entered the genetics twice? If anyone has pics that would be fabulous!

I've never seen one, though I'm confident it's possible. Personally, I wouldn't consider it a jellybean anymore, just like I don't consider my hybrid to be a bloodparrot as she is a BP x midas hybrid.

Ok I offically have babies. They weren't supposed to survive to this stage. The parents were only in the tank 3 days before spawning! The babies are swimming and taking food off the surface. Some look pink and some look black. I'll keep you posted!

Hi valleyrich,

I know its only a few days since but i was just wondering how your fry are doing??

steve

The fry are doing great. There were at least 200 to start with. We culled out about half. The parents and the tank just couldn't handle that many. We also separated about 12 into a separate tank to see how they would do. They seem just fine. They are still fry looking but are starting to get black stripes from the daddy. The convict was a better parent than I expected. He helps feed them and keep them safe. The parents are starting to break up Cichlid pellets for the babies. The only odd thing we have noticed is that some of the fry eat off the top and some eat off the bottom and don't seem to switch off. This wasn't a planned spawn so I wasn't able to keep notes but I'll keep you posted! :D

Well, as what many people think, a parrot is a cross between a convict and a midas, I think the babies will be quite aggressive and uh, kinda a mutt hybrid... though that's what I just think. Don't take it personally.

I take nothing about fish personally. This was posted in the first place because it was such a mutt match up. This is a jellybean (a mutt hybrid itself) that I picked up several years ago as a pair. The male died and the female had been very depressed ever since. She was even laying eggs with no mate. Decided to throw in something, anything that she wouldn't immediatly kill. The convict was the winner and now we have babies. She is much happier and the Convict is running hard to keep up with the babies. I personally see no problem with hybrids if the fish breed on their own. I am not however a fan of test tube fish. These will be some interesting babies. When they are large enough I will post pics.

A parrot isnt a cross between a convict and a midas.. I've never heard that before.. and it doesn't seem like it at all.

From what i have heard, no one is completely sure about what parrots are exactly. most see alot of convict characteristics in them, but no one i know knows for sure. it sounds cool valleyrich, i would definately like to see pictures of the fry and their pround parents.

incorrect,

The red blood parrot was first "created" in Taiwan back in the late eighties. Little is known about it outside Taiwan. According to Cher Chan in "Cichlids in Taiwan", it first appeared in 1986. The parents of the hybrid was a mystery back then, now many fish farms in Taiwan can produce it from a male "Cichlasoma citrinellum" (midas cichlid) and a female "Cichliasoma synspilum" (redhead cichlid). The author doubts the purity of the parent stock, though.

I stand corrected :D

Nice info genesis, makes sense. i looked around online at the suspected parent fish online and i came across alot of flowhorn pictures and info. are these same fish used in createing flowerhorn?

It explains why the convict and the parrot can cross anyway. the parents of the parrot (cichliasoma synspilum and cichlasoma citrinellum) share the same species name as the convict (cichlasoma nigrofasciatum) :D

We still like pictures of the fry. Where do you live, I may want one... :shifty:
Once they are big enough you can have as many as you want!!!

Do keep in mind she is a Jellybean not a Blood and was never painted. The male is pure black convict. The babies....well they definatly have black stripes...
