I have a cycled 55 gallon tank with 40 pounds LR, 10 pounds live sand, a small wrasse, some hermit crabs, a baby snapper, an arrow crab, and a panther grouper.
There's also about 700 gph of water flow in the tank from a powerhead and two filters.

I just got the grouper today and he is eating well.

My question is, if I get two bubble anemones and more LR and some corals, will I be able to add in a couple clowns (perculas or clarki's)? And will they live in peace with the grouper?

that grouper will outgrow the tank several times over. They have been known to get to over 1.5 feet in length

anenomes need to be added to a mature tank (around 1 year) they need the powerheads protecting so they cant walk into them. Lots of light. The grouper will become aggressive so i think small clowns would get battered.

Agree. If any clowns were to go into there, would definitely have to be a larger, more aggressive species.

HI

I would take the panther grouper back to lfs as it will esily out grow your tank with in the first 3 months dosnt take long and once they get bigger the lfs usally wont take them back as they are not good sellers as they are very aggrissive and will eat anything that can fit in its mouth as for the clowns that is a big NO NO panthers will chase tthe smaller fish i really recomend you to get rid of it

regards scott

I'm getting a 100+ gallon tank for Christmas. The grouper's still a juvenile.

it will still outgrow 100 gallons. A full sized one needs soemthing daft like 3-500 galllons

well, I got rid of it on Saturday and got a store credit so I bought a yellow tang and tomato clown with it.

A wise decision i think. They will be great fish for your 100 gallon upgrade.
One problem though. Right before I was going to put the tang and clown in the tank, I measured the water for nitrate, ammonia, etc. The grouper made the ammonia spike up to 1 mg/L and the nitrite to .75 mg/L when they were 0 before!! So I quickly made a 10 gallon with all new saltwater some LR for the new fish, and I'm going to add the new fish to the 55 gallon once it settles down. Probably by this weekend. But will the 10 gallon experiance any spikes in ammonia and nitrite until this weekend?

That shouldnt have happened!

How old is the tank?
what stock was in before?
how long did you stock the tank over?

if you have sufficient filteration and stock slowly ammonia should always be a constant zero. Good move on the water change. Are you missing anything? Usually in a cycled tank ammonia comes from something dead somewhere. You say you have about 40LBS of live rock, you could maybe do with 10 or 15 more to be up to the ideal level.

the tank is 10 months old. There has always been the two wrasse in there. there was at one point, a few damsels and a very small grey snapper.
What do you mean by stocking the tank over?

I did a 1/5 water change, and the next day the ammonia went down to 0 and the nitrite to .25
it may be zero right now, so I am going to do the water tests.

i meant if it had just cycled had you dumped several fish in there at once. But over 10 months is fine!

yeh, everything is back to 0, except nitrate.
The tang died unexpectedly . I have no clue as to how, because I checked the water quality and it was all 0 too. The clown is doing very good in the ten gallon though. Should I move it to the 55 since everything is ok now?
