hey guys, im thinking of getting a 125g to house a pair of oscars. would i be able to have any other tank mates in with them? i was thinking some kind of catfish or a pike/gar. would these go in the tank? thanks

If you can get a definite pair and not just 2 oscars then it should be ok, depending on dimensions,
As for tankmates it would depend on the aggression of the oscars, and the amount of filtration you have on the tank.
I would personally only add a few bottom dwellers, such as a group of pictus cats or clown loach, or maybe a syno or pleco.

yeah, i was planning on getting a group of oscars when they are tiny and watching and seeing if i can get an actual pair. what will i be looking for exactly tho? will they break off from the pack and hang out together or what? ive never kept an actual pair of things, so im not sure what im specifically looking for.

i posted in the hardware forums about my filtration here: http://www.fishforums.net/content/Hardware...lf/232408/125g/ im still debating what my filtration would be. im kind of leaning toward a sump atm.

A 125 will be good for a pair of Oscars, the best way to get a true pair would be as you said to get a bunch of youngsters and grow them out. You should know when you have a pair as 2 will stay together and stake out a territory, most likely having the others cowered in a corner somewhere.

With regards to tankmates, I wouldn't add any other non catfish personally, I feel a breeding pair will most likely make the fishes life tough, or kill it. Catfish you may be ok with as some are 'armoured' and should be able to cope aslong as they have some place to retreat to. Though if you want eggs and baby oscars I would stick to no tankmates.
