What would a good species be to get a pair or maybe a trio of for a 10 gallon tank?

Few questions to start everyone off.

Is your tank cycled? How old is your tank?

What kind of fish are you leaning towards? (Livebearers? Catfish? Tetras? etc.)

What kind of tank are you wanting? (Brackish? Freshwater? Completely Marine?)

What are your water conditions? (How hard is the water? What is the pH? What is the temperature? Do you have a heater?)

What kind of filter do you have?

What kind of substrate/bottom is in your tank?

What are you tank dimensions?

This info will give people a general idea of which fish can best be in your tank for the LONG TERM. Any fish can just be thrown in a tank, you want fish that will be happy and healthy in your specific tank. Everyone's tanks on here can all look the same, but if you pick them apart, you will find that while some may have the similar ideas, themes, or even conditions, there will be something that will set them apart and make their tank "work" with their stock.

Also, if you have ideas, post them here and people will tell you if the fish will work or not.

Excellent questions from emmettbaby.

Answer those and we can help =)

Well the tank is cycling at the moment and the water is typically around 7-8 on the ph scale and would be a freshwater tank. Its a 10 gallon tank, standard dimensions and the substrate is a fine gravel. I was leaning toward some kind of small gourami pair/trio or maybe a pair of small cichlids.

Hiya, if the tank is cycling, I wouldn't consider it mature for about a year, so I would stay away from sensitive species (which small cichlids are) and so are gourami. You could try it and be fine, but I personally wouldn't add gourami or dwarf cichlids to a newly cycled tank. Is there anything else you like?

10 gal - 38ltrs?

How about Scarlet Badis? You could have 1 male and a couple of females housed together.

They need a well planted tank, with sand or fine gravel.

Good suggestion for badis.

How about a trio of the scarlet badis, some sultry lighting (use floating plants), loads of bright green plants (like anubias and crypts) and a shoal of green neon tetras? I think that would look stunning. The scarlet badis would shine like jewels and the tetras would shimmer and glimmer in the low light.

Ohhh that sounds fab! I want a tank for them now

Could get some shrimp for the bottom of the tank too x

Definitely! Red cherry shrimp or perhaps something else colourful and exotic.

Wish I had a spare 10 gal right now, lol!
