I have just recently gotten a tank and filled it with water to test the filter and such.
I bought one of those backgrounds but I decided that I really would like to paint a black background on instead. I think a black background and onyx sand would accentuate my dwarf rasboras, habrosus corys and cherry shrimp once I get them.

Anyways, here's my tank as of now:

How do I paint the background? What kind of paint?? Do I have to take out all the water or can I just take off the filter, tape off where I'm painting, and spray away?

thanks.

i wouldnt use spray i would use a roller and make sure you use a paint that wont rot the paint

its much easyer and better looking if you get a bit of black acrylic and put inside the tank at the back

ok. no spray :D i dunno what i'm talking about so i'll take your word for it.

I really don't know the kinds of paints available and don't don't know what you mean by "a paint that won't rot the paint."

and are u saying I should paint the inside of the tank? I guess I assumed i'd paint the outside but what do i know? hmmmm

please clarify i'm a little confused.

do not pant the inside of the tank unless u want (high) fish lol... it WILL kill them no matter what paint you use. use a roller and pant the outside i suggest a solid collor like blue or black but its up to u. (use lead free paint)

alright. thanks

i think i will go with black. what brands of paints do you recommend? should i do a glossy or a flat black? i know its really just preference but what do you recommend?

Is this a glass tank? If so, there is paint for glass (other paints just bead up and essentially roll off) that you can get in an art store or even craft stores. It's not cheap though. There are other paints out there that are for non-porous surfaces. You'll have to ask the store for more details about how appropriate a specific paint is for your application. Just doing a quickie search, here are some possibilities:

Glossies Enamel Colors

Gallery Glass Paint

Good luck! And let us see the finished product! :)

Why not use a black background instead of painting it on?
What if you dont like it, or at some point you want to change it?

if you use a normal black background you always get water runs down the back and it looks uglt

i ment get a paint that wont rot the seals sorry

you best and nices option is to get a sheet of black acrylic and place it inside the tank at the back

People here have been covering the back of the tank with vaseline then placing the background on, using a credit card to remove the creases and air bubbles. Apparently it works well preventing the water running down.
