I just went by P.J. Pets in the Scarborough Town Center (Toronto) this aft. and took a look at their bettas. P.J.s just moved to a new space in the mall on Friday and where they used to have their bettas in those tiny, depressing & disgusting little thimble sized cups of water, now the bettas are in a fantastic looking display of big bowls that hold at least 1.5 cups, maybe 2 cups of water each! A couple of the boys had huge bubble nests and my daughter & I were admiring them when the guy who runs the fish area came by.
I told him how much better I thought the boys looked in the larger bowls and how happy I was to see them in a decent amount of water.
Gotta give credit where credit is due! :D

If 1.5 cups is an upgrade I'd hate to see what they were kept in before. At least they are making progress.

you're kidding, right?
Most pet stores that I've seen keep their bettas in these horrible little cups that contain at most maybe 4 oz. of water.
For lots of horror stories, see almost any thread in this forum containing the keyword "Walmart"

The wal-mart I have here holds about 1.5 cups of water, and I think they are terrible. The cups I have seen seem to be consistent with the ones that I have seen posted on this forum many times. Maybe I am just missing the pics of the smaller cups? In comparison to thse cups, another lfs near me has cups that hold around 3 cups, which seems to be great compared to most others.

Yeah I guess maybe my WM is good compared to some on size! I guess the biggest problem is cleanliness~~

my LFS keeps them in jam jars of about 15cm in diameter and i thought that was bad, now reading this they live in a mansion compared to others

The bettas at my local Petsmart, which are kept in the tiny cups, seem MUCH healthier than those at my local Walmart which are kept in bigger cups. :dunno: I wonder if it has something to do with the blue stuff Petsmart puts in the water--After asking about it, they told me it was an antibacterial agent. Of course, many of the betta cups at Walmart aren't fully filled & I'm probably only filled with staight tap water. :(

My local wal-mart sometimes has the blue stuff in the cups too. I didn't know what it was for either. I am with you on the thinking my wal-mart was bad. I think mine are terrible, but it seems some aremuch worse.

That blue stuff tends to be Methylene Blue, which is an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent.
