hello people at the moment i have 8 tiger barbs, 5 rosy tetras ( i think thats what they are), 2 sucking loach and a peppered cory, is this overstocked? All i want is some more tiger barbs because i think they are amazing fish.

So am i ovestocked and if not how many more tiger barbs could i have in there?
thanks for any help :good:

what size tank???sucking loaches grow 10" and r nasty buggers to boot

i think your fine for more fish myself if i were u id get myself another 7-8 tiber barbs if there what u really like

but i would also lose the sucking loaches and replace them with a bristlnose plec myself

and also pick up some more of the cories they like there own kind get another 4-5 of them and then id say your about right

ive no doubt someone will disagree with me though but thats what i think :good:

Yeah, this is what you have

8 tiger barbs
5 rosy tetras
2 sucking loach
1 cory

i would make it this

14 Tiger barbs
2 Bristlenose Plec
6 pepperd Corys
and lose the tetras and the loach.

I'm just going to pretty much echo what MojoDex has said, you would be fine with some more tiger barbs unless your filter is unusually small for your size of tank :good: . To be safe, don't add another 7 or 6 all at once, add 3-4 and then after a week or two you can add more if you still want to. This is just so the bacteria in the filter can catch up with the extra bioload.
You could do with some more peppered corydoras too, and while your getting more tiger barbs it would be idea to add a couple more of them (ideally 5 or 6 though) :).

You don't need to worry about re-homing your tetras...I don't know why DiscusAngel would do that, probably just her preference :good: .

The 'sucking loaches' are most likely this fish, and if they are you will need to re-home them at some point.

i think the Tetras will be unsettled by to many tigerbarbs. btw im a he i chose the name discusAngel cuz there my favourite fish lol!

Fair enough lol, my mistake  . Dunno why I thought that, you get guy-angels too,

But the tetras would be fine with the tiger barbs, with tiger barbs it's generally the more you have the less nippy they are towards other fish.
The tetras are already in with a good number of the barbs, so I would presume they are already getting along fine.

And if the tetras are Hyphessobrycon rosaceus, they can be nippy themselves if not kept in large enough groups so are perfectly suited to share a tank with tiger barbs :).

Yeah, for a 40 gal (ish) tank you're not particularly overstocked (you may be able to get to 80" worth of fish eventually, but stock to that level slowly) but the choice of fish is not very good for a happy tank. For bottom dwelling fish, cory's like to be in groups of at least 4, preferably 6 or more. Tiger barbs do better in a large group, they're so busy fighting between themselves that they don't bother the other fish in the tank. I would say that a shoal of tetras of some kind would be a nice contrast to the tiger barbs.

Seeing the tank is slightly larger, have you considered any of the small plec's, such as bristlenose or bulldog. you could have a pair or a small group. What do you think of Cichlids too? Angels would be a good choice for a tank of your size, although their fins may become a target for the tiger barbs. Perhaps some of the more robust dwarf cichlids such as Kribinesis would do well. The smaller apistogramma genus are probably too timid for a tank containing tiger barbs. My A. Caciatores gets spooked by my group of (ok 10 is a lot even if most are juvenile) bronze cory's!

most of that has already been said and i would never EVER recommend an angel fish with tiger barbs! tiger barbs being one of the worst fin nippers there are! some german rams might work on the dwarf cichlid front though

I do agree on the angel front now you come to mention it. I was just thinking aloud as you do, hence why i put the

bit in there afterwards.

With enough tiger barbs it's worth a try if you really want angel fish though.
It can work very well especially if you have a nippy angel.
It really depends more on the angels temperament, and you need a good number of barbs (like 8+).
I'm getting tiger barbs with my angel :p .

Not true, but that can sometimes be the case :).
You have to deal with everything on a case-by-case basis.
It can and does frequently work well.
Tiger barbs are renowned for being nippy, but this is usually because people don't keep enough of them.
Even then, in some cases people have kept only one or two tiger barbs with a fish like fancy goldfish or a betta and they haven't nipped fins, because those individual fish were insecure they reacted by sulking and being depressed rather than being uber-aggressive as they can be.

The way I plan on doing it, if its being cruel to anything its the tiger barbs. I'm buying a good number of them at 1-2" and growing them up with my angelfish (who will probably nip at them).
Its been done many a time before.
I wouldn't suggest anyone ever tries it with a veil tail angel though, this is still not entirely out of the question.
