i would nix the strips and try to invest in a liquid test kit (Api Master kit or something similar) The strips are notoriously innacurate.

OP has already said they have an API kit on the way (arriving 2mo) :good:

he he yes it's om it's way!!

Just a thought but in my old 60 litre tank had a cartridge filter on it, when I decided to get a new tank I cut all the old media off the old cartridge and left it in the filter and then added a new cartridge so bacteria could build up on the new cartridge while retaining the old media. When I setup the new tank I took all of the old media out of the filter and put it in the new filter, leaving the 2 week old catridge in the old tank. So the new cartridge is only having to support 6 platties now and the new filter on the new tank with the old media is having to support 14 fish! Considering both old media and the new cartridge were supporting 24 fish without a problem will I still see any kind of Ammonia spike and how long will it be till both tanks are cycled if they indeed need to be?
Sorry if this is a bit confusing! Also I took enough gravel out of the old tank for a thin layer which just about covers the bottom of the new tank as the old one had too much in it anyway!

Fingers crossed I am not going to get any problems with either tank!!

Also I am thinking about what to stock the new one with when it has settled down!

I was thinking 6 guppies and 6 harlequins giving me a total of 36 fish, the filter is a fluval u4 and flows enough for up to a 250 litre tank, at the moment it is set at about 50% flow so I think that is about right for 160 litres!

Thanks again for all the help

I think I've understood that right.

THe new tank with ALL the old media should be fine.

The old tank with 2 week old media will probably not be fine - there will have been very little transfer of bacteria from old to new in the 2 weeks. Also, the gravel will not have helped. You will probably have to re-cycle that filter. You could take some of the mature media back into the old filter, to seed it, that would help quite a bit.

ok that's great!

It's far easier to do 50% water changes on the little tank, I really dont fancy 50% chnages on the 160 litre one took ages to fill it up lol!

When it has cycled could I add one betta to the platties, the filter is a gentle one so hopefully wont annoy him!

Shouldn't be a problem, I wouldn't have thought, depending on the temperament of the particular betta you get.

It's more for my 6 year old boy, he has seen one at pets at home and wants to rescue it!!

I want to rescue their their entire stock wnehever I go in there!

They way they have dead fish floating around is sickening, they had a notice on the front of the guppy tank saying "not for sale due to illness" there were about 10 live fish in there with at least another 10 dead, how on earth can you kill guppies like that they are so hardy!

Their platties have fin rot and look really unhealthy!

I am amazed their is no animal rights groups for Tropical fish!

That's why I never go in there.

I personally don't trust P@H, because they are a chain, and my impression is that they don't employ fish specialists. Other forum members disagree with me - I think it depends on the individual staff at each branch.

I've always bought from indie stores, they're generally cheaper for bettas than Maidenheads (or at least locally to me that's the case).

When my current crowntail goes, I've promised myself a Halfmoon from www.bettasplendens.co.uk - since he's local to me, I can go round and pick the one that I want.

I tend to rescue rare beauties from my local chain petstores. They aren't very well taken care of there so I nurse em up to health (so long as they don't slide passed dividers again :p)

All that I've seen in my rare visits to P@H is standard red or blue veiltails. At least the chains in the states get some interesting stuff. Of my LFSs, I've only ever seen one that stocked anything other than veils and crowns. I have heard of some Maidenheads that have halfmoons, but I've never seen any in the 3 branches that I've been in. For me, at least, if I want something special, I need to go to a specialist.

I get occasionally lucky. I have two VTs, 1 CT, and last time I went I found a Blue/white butterfly doubletail HM...the problem I have is getting one that doesn't die from ich. I lost one CT and 2 HM to ich within a week of bringing them home. :(

That's horrible that you see that when you go to that store! I have seen some bad chains here, but the one I usually go to take decent care of their fish, at least the ones in the tanks....I would love to rescue all of their bettas though.

Hello again!

My test kit arrived but I think it's the wrong one!

It's an ammonia one not that master one lol

Anyway I have tested the big tank and the levels were about .25 ammonia, so I did a 80% water change, reduced it to almost zero.

Tested again and it has gone back up again to about .40. Now 2 days ago I added some bogwood. Even with the high ammonia levels the fish
are the most active they have been and are all very very happy, before a few of the platties were on the bottom with clamped fins etc now
they are all playing in the current of the filter. I am about to do another huge water change but is it possible the bogwood would have lowered the
PH quite a bit providing relief from the ammonia in the tank?

Thanks for the help
