I currently have a 10g tank that I have had set up for about 9 months now and everything is looking good. In it I have 6 cardinal tetras, 4 longfin zebra dainos, and 2 skunk cories. I am running a penguin mini filter and an airstone. I want more fish but don't necessarily have the space for another tank. I am checking out my options for a 5g tank.

I do have a few options though (in order of my preference):

I don't know if I would be safe to add 1 more fish (a dwarf gourami) to my current tank.
Add gourami but upgrade to bigger filter.
I think I have a small old hexagon tank that I could move the dainos to, and then add the gourami to the 10g (no airstone).
Get a 5g tank (probably dwarf puffers).

Suggestions?

It's be OK without the danios, they need at least a 24'' 20g tank IMO. And you ideally need one more skunk cory.

Nope, not as it is.

Add gourami but upgrade to bigger filter.
Filtration isn't really the problem.

That'd be an even worse idea, either get the aforementioned danio minimum tank size or rehome the danios.

I'd sort out the current situation first, and a 5g can only hold 1 dwarf puffer.

Or a betta for the 5gal then you still get a fish.

Ok here is my interim decision. I found that old hexagon tank, its just under a 3 gal. I am going to get 1 fish, probably a puffer, and house him in there until I can upgrade to that 5 gal and nget 1 or 2 more to go with him.

NO, as OohFeeshy already said DP are the samllest puffers and in a comunity on needs at least 5 gal, you might get away with one in a 3 gal, but not any more than one in 10 gal.

I'm new to puffers, so I can't dispute this too much but here is one of many places I have found that say 1 puffer can be in under 5 gal:
