i have a 20g tank with:
4 coreys
6 cherry barbs
3 swordtails.

would it be overcrowded if i put in 1 dwarf gourami or at a push a shoal of tetras or would it be best left alone

A shoal of tetra's should be fine.

I have found that you can push the margins with smaller species a little bit as long as you do not overfeed and adhere to regular weekly waterchanges and tank maintenance.

You're probably overstocked a little. You have about 32" of adult fish (depending on the type corys you have) so I wouldn't add anything else. What type filtration do you have? That could make a difference.

Edit: Looks as if I am outnumbered on this one but as I said, you may be fine if you are overfiltered.

A shoal of tetras should be fine in my experiance. I have found the inch per gallon rule uesless, and not neccassary. I have at times gone over this barrier by some way, and all my fish are colourful, lively, eating well and breeding!

If you do think you are slightly overstocked after adding your tetras, weekly water changes will combat this problem and you should be fine. As said above also, make sure you aren't overfeeding.

i have a fluval 1 and fluval 2 internal filters running at the moment, was thinking of getting an external fluval in a few months tho.
do you think that is sufficient

Yes the filters are fine, cherry barbs are only little fish, and my cherry barbs get on well with the harlequins and black neons.

Should be fine too.
