I was wondering if bettas will continue to eat even if they are not hungry? I use to feed my fish only 2 pellets twice a day and he would sometimes not eat the second pellet in the evening (second feeding) or he wouldn't eat the 3rd pellet i threw in there. But I threw in 4 today and he just devoured all them in sconds. Then I gave him 2 more...same results. I threw in one and he ate that very quickly too. I was surprised. So I just got home and I wasn't gonna feed him again but I decided to give him 2 more.....they were gone instantly. Is this normal? Was I under feeding him? Coz the food container says 6-8 pellets twice a day but when he was only eating a few I didnt think anything about it. And I've read that som people here only feed their fish one or two pellets a day. I'm confused. Tahnks for ur help.

my betta has the same issue...he eats a lot of food :| i tossed in 6 - 8 pellets once and he ate ALL of them, obviously i dont' do that on a reuglar basis, i just stop after 4 pelletts are so.

My feeding schedule is usually 4 pelets at morning, 4 more at night, when i see that he seems a bit bloated i cut down to approxmiately 2 pellets are so. Even though your betta keeps eating deosnt' mean you should keep tossing food in though, i heard somewhere that fish wont' stop eating even if theyr'e full ('im not 100% sure on that or anything tho :/ )

that's just my own personal experience. I just try to keep the feeding schedule consistent :)

Yeah cute, I heard that too about they'll keep eating even if they are full.

2 pellets 2 times a day just doesn't cut it for my betta. I usually give about 2 pellets, 3 times a day, or 4 twice a day if I know I'm going to be out or something. So yes, I've heard there is such a thing as overfeeding, so don't overdo it. If you fish has been fine on the schedule you've been feeding him with, there's no reason to change.

thanks guys. And I I've heard of that too, that's why I posted this. Actually heard it from my girlfreinds dad. He said he kept feeding a goldfish and it died

yeah i think 4 pellets twice a day is alright for my bettta (i'm usually out most of the day so i can't really feed him 3 times a day), he just seems a litlte depressed and i'm not sure why :)

in any case, overfeeding is bad, but if that happens i think you can just not feed it for a day or two and let it digest everything out of its system :)

I've always fed more than what the packaging says and none of my fish look fat, in fact some looked a bit skinny. I usually feed twice a day and when they are getting betta bio-gold pellets they get 6 or 7 usually. I just recently got some HBH betta bites and these things are so tiny I can't imagine only feeding 6-8 a feeding like the packaging says, those bites are so tiny I'm going to feed them to my older fry occassionally (they're small enough for them). However my fish get frozen or live food mostly, only get the bites when I don't feel like defrosting something and am out of live food.

I've never tried live food. Well I did try the ghost shrimp but my betta hasn't bothered with him. Why kinds are best to feed betta's? The only pet store close is Petsmart, so that's what I have to work with on that front.

i got petsmart here too, ho wmuch does a decent meal of live food cost anyways?

feeding is a tricky thing because most fish will literally eat themselves to death if given the chance. how much to feed a betta depends on size and how active it is.

frozen bloodworms (thawed before feeding) do a nice job - haven't yet personally met a betta who didn't eat them. white worms and other starter cultures are available online - aquabid has some cultures.
