Wow, that canary is beautiful, I have never seen a red one like that.
Do you keep both birds alone? :/ Finches and Canarys are social birds and would appreciate some friends. I would also add some more perches of different textures (dowel, natural, rope, etc) and some toys so they have something to play with.

Thanks for the kind comments!

Umm....male canaries are not very social birds, males defend territories and will attack other males during breeding season. They have even been known to attack females on occasion too. That's why most breeders keep the sexes seperated until breeding season. The zebra finches on the other hand are social birds, but we only keep the one as I have no intention of breeding them again, and no intention of getting a bigger cage to have more in there. Even though it may seem lonely for him, I can assure you that he gets plenty of attention from us!! Someone is always home in our household. I've tried various little toys but neither bird has shown any interest in anything except nesting material which they like to throw around the cage! And, yes, they have perches of different sizes in their cages, both have natural branches in there to help keep their nails trimmed down too...and I agree that Romeo (the male canary) is quite the looker! Quite a singer too!! To help keep his color, he is given foods like cooked sweet potatoes, strawberries, raspberries, grated carrots (plus a bunch of other fresh fruits and veggies- and uh, Bugger, the zebra finch, gets the same too...)

Ugh, this is getting annoying! Why can't I add smilies to my posts? Ugh....

Red canaries are produced using coloured food, if you stop feeding the colour food they gradually fade.

Nice birds, I used to have around a mix of 50 canaries/zebras/bengalese/orange-cheeks/diamond doves & quails in a big aviary. Zebra finches are extemely prolific breeders, did you know they are as common as a sparrow down under? Probably a pest!!
