Sensesfail , can I ask, if your hamster has red eyes, does it mean its parents were albinos. Our 2 hamsters have really dark eyes but when you look at the eyes against bright light they glow red. Any ideas?

Any hamster that has red eyes has 2 copies of the cinnamon gene. Hamsters can have other colour genes as well as cinnamon, so the hamster may not necessarily be a cinnamon colour but could still have red eyes.

There is no such thing as an albino syrian hamster. Hamsters often appear to be albino but this is usually just an interaction between two or more different colours (including cinnamon as this is where the red eyes come from). It is possible that both of the parents of your hamsters dont have red eyes but they 'carry' the cinnamon gene. If this is the case the babies each received a copy of the gene from each parent and the young would show the red eyes.

If your hamsters eyes are black but only shine red in bright light then this could be caused by a completely different gene. There is a gene seen in hamsters called the white bellied gene which can show in cream based colours as roan and most other colours as a white belly. This gene does no harm if the hamster only has one copy of the gene. If two hamsters that carry this gene are bred together 25% of the young will be eyeless whites.

The cause of your hamsters red eyes would depend largely on the colour of the hamster and possibly any patterned genes it has.
