i am planning on getting some ottos and was wondering if they do best in groups. i will get more than one, because it is a 29 gallon tank, but was wondering how many i should get for that tank. i also have a 10 gallon that is in desperate need of an algea cleaning :/ how many should i put in that one.

ps- both tanks are cycled and have been set up for at least 1 1/2 years.

thanx for any help
Jenny

The more the merrier IMO with ottos, id get at least 6 for the 29g and 3 for the 10g, just remember to supplement their diet with algea wafers and cucumber once theyve got the algea down so they dont starve.

do otos need wood in their diet - we can get pleco chips here with 'wood fibres' in them that cost twice the price of any of the other pleco type wafers - have got otos in all tanks but only driftwood in one

Ottos to my knowledge dont actually need wood in their diet but probably do ingest some when rasping algea off of drift wood, i would think as long as you have at least one piece of drift/bogwood in your tank it would be fine.

Hi i have 4 @ 1 inch these are cool little things catfish i think not plecs
you must ensure you have broad leave plants this is must for them as they love the goodness from them also i use the algae waffers 1 at night as there (nocturnal)
and i also tried zuccini which they like and lettuce :fun:

are they easy to breed - I assume I've got m and f as one is a lot bigger than the other  oh - and do you cook their veges?

Breeding: Can be difficult. Lower the water level and raise the temperature slightly. Then add water to the tank through a watering can, at the original temperature. The eggs will be laid under leaves.
Gender: Difficult to determine. Females grow larger and are rounder bodied

hope this ok and can help i wouldnt say there very easy they dont croup much like fish

When feeding veggies i just place them in a small bowl and pour boiling water from the kettle over them leaving them in the water for about one minute to soften them slightly.

:) thanks guys

cucumber and zucchini ok with the seeds out - anything else - imagine they'd have problems with peas
