2 of my new otos died but i seen it coming. they never ate any thing   But the 1 i have pigs out :) But i just put my sand in today and found them. :-(

I am very sorry about the loss of your ottos. Maybe you will find some in your lfs the same. I did when i lost my angel. Got one exactly the same.

Sorry for your loss, what are your test results in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, as they need good water quality.

0 nitrite and 0 to .25 amonima i did a 50% water change when i changed the gravel to sand.

Unfortunately, ottos seem to suffer MFD (Mysterious Fish Death) as much if not not more than any other community fish. I have read both here and other places that alot of it has to do with how they are caught in the wild and then transported to the local LFS. You most likely have done nothing wrong on your end. I would just try again. If you can get a few ottos that have already been at your LFS for a couple of months, they will probably make it in your aquarium. The stressed and starved ones will gone by then. I know that sounds kind of "cold" but it appears to the truth when it comes to ottos. They have a rough time coming from the wild and often don't survive. :(

I am sorry about your fish. I have lost two of the seven I got and it never feels good to lose fish.

no it doesnt, i cant get any more otos probaly for weeks, because my lfs doesnt carry them and i have to go out of my way to get them, i am picking some sort of fish this weekend.

Can you ask the LFS where you do get them how long they have had them??
You may have to try a few times before you get ones that survive. You can tell a happy otto because he will eat like a pig. In fact, they need to eat like a pig to survive. I have found that it helps to keep a piece of cucumber or zuchinni in the tank for them to munch on. They will not make it on just the algae in your tank and may not eat algae wafers some times. Mine love cucumber.

i know the 1 otto to surive eats like a pig, but dont know if i will get more ottos. the 1 i still have liked to be by himself instead of the others.

I just bought some otos to clean the algae on my tank and one turned up dead! He seems to have alot of algae in his belly, as well as some red spots towards the tail...any ideas of what it could be?

It may or may not be algae. Many otos die with swollen abdomen. I lose about 1/3 of the otos after about a week, and about half of them die with swollen abdomen. I do have to agree that many otos are susceptible to MFD.

I know the bad rep that ottos have, but there are success stories too. I got 6 of them several weeks ago and they are all doing just fine. (just needed to post a 'good' story about them, seems all I hear are the bad ones :) )

How long has your tank been set up Frank3333? A well established tank would increase an otto's chances signifigantly. If yours is fairly new, give 'em a try in a few weeks.

Also note that in addition to algae (or other food) and clean water, ottos need oxygen-rich water. Perhaps lack of sufficient oxygen is one reason for the so-called MFDs?

I've had my Oto's for about a half year now. From the original three, I still have them all.

There could be many reasons why they'd died, from a bad batch to poor water quality etc. All you can do is to provide them with the best of living comforts you can possibly provide. Sounds to me you have.

You've done your best. Well done for trying, and never give up on your learning.

:)

Yeah otos are known to die for no apparent reason when introduced to a new tank. This is what put me off buying a few! I can't say why they weren't eating though, maybe it was the stress of being introduced to a new tank? How long havre you had them for?
