Hey folks. I bought an oto 6 days ago from Maidenhead (the last oto in stock.)  and the guy's been happily muching away until today. he was fine this morning, but on returning home i found him struggling at the top of the waterline, upside down with a very bloated stomach, I've put him in an emergency tank for now but i think the little guy is about to snuff it. I'm new to the hobby so a noobie when it comes to all the different illnesses it could be. But possibly some kind of bacterial infection?
(I've recently lost one lampeye to a fungus around the mouth, put it out of its misery before it could pass it all on, hoping nothing's left in there to harm the others!)

oops, showing NO3 as 10, NO2 as 0.  planted tank with a tonne of moss etc in it.

Bless Hi.
Don't feed him for a few days.
Try some peas if he's eating. But only peas, or frozen daphnia.
What does it look like when  he goes to toilet.
Epson salt baths to help draw the fluids out.

It's not sounding to hopeful for him.

The little dude didnt make it, he went stupidly quickly.  His 'excrement exit hole' (to be nice) was a dark red colour, looked like it was sore.

Sorry he didn't make it, it looked like a bacterial infection.
Sadly many Oto's don't make it as they're mostly wild caught & not in the best condition when they reach the Lfs so are open to infections :(

  • Thanks, thought that might be the case. Wasn't fair keeping the lil fella all by himself anyway. He was the last one in the aquatic shop, so wanted to give him a decent home at least.

With dropsy fish can also get enlarged red sore anus.

Bless Him.
Sorry for your loss.
R.I.P.

Keep an eye on other fish for when they go to the toilet.
