I just joined another fish forum that is connected to myspace.com and was appalled at the advice people were giving! There was a guy who suggested that someone keep an oscar in a 10 gallon aquarium and later told someone else that they need a good small tank to start with salt water, he said 5 gallons! I am a firm believer in the theory of bigger is better when it comes to 1st tanks and this kid was saying a 10 (u.s.) gal is perfect, I have one myself but for a beginner it is far from it! And, surprise surprise, he works in the wish department of, guess where, yup, you got it! Wal*Mart! I now truly appreciate this forum as truly the best around with friendly and knowledgeable members. There was even a guy that told someone on the other forum to sell their fish stuff and give up!!! I was appalled, last time I make that pistake of looking at another forum!

once you find a good forum your sorted.

i have never thought of looking for another forum as all the info needed is here and is a great online community

I wasnt looking for a new forum really, I'm a member on myspace and they have groups so I joined one....for 15 minutes till i heard all that and quickly un-joined!

Have to admit I am a member of another forum too, but it is a respectable forum, not like the one you mentioned. In fact, it's very similar to this one. I just like the opportunity to waste more time online.... And the more people you ask, the more chance you have of finding someone with the relevant experience. But clearly not in the awful forum you found yourself in- you were wise to get out.

Yeah dwarf, i agreee. I ask for advice and then research the advice a get to see if it's viable...even if it's from plant geniuses like gf225 and the like!

I'm a member to many forums. I like to get as much info as I can before trusting anything I'm told and it certainly helps. I read a lot of books and will do research over the web but I find the best advice comes from people who actually have experience with the problem/fish/whatever in question

I have registered to some appaulling forums before... Usually the worst forums are the kind that require you to register before you can look at them. Every forum has its people that give "bad" advice... Its just figuring out which ones don't have a clue and which people are the fishy pros ;)

I tried a few other forums but they have nowhere near as much traffic as this one. Here is like a chat room so to speak, where there are always members online no matter what the time of day. Although you can spend too much time on the site, but if you are being educated by some of the posts and replies (some of them atleast) then it is priceless.

Seen as the site was down i went to some old forums, there hardly anyone of them anymore, plus even this site as more members than some of the good old sites, which have gone down hill now.

I think anyone who limits themselve to just one forum is foolish, for every forum will have some weaknesses. With this forum it is Saltwater. There are plenty of knowledgable people, but nothing like the knowledge that is available on some of the reef only forums with over 100,000 members. Especially for the DIY aspects.

This is the best FW forum I have found, though.

In the hour that the site was down today, I decided to check out some other forums, they are ok to talk with members, but for the volume of traffic this place gets its much better, and the people on here seem to know more about medical problems, and raising/caring for fish etc. :)

Same here. I can't seem to find one that I like as much as TFF though....

If i went to a different forum that was that bad, I would tell them to fix their mistakes before any fish died. Could you tell me which forum this was? I simply cannot let such idiocy go without correcting it.

I have read many books and other information volumes in the past. But many of them were old, so I come to TFF for updates, and maybe some brand new discoveries.

I wish it wasn't illegal to post other forums' Urls......Liked we'd lose intrest in TFF anyways!
Maybe if a mod Ok'd that we could paste url's for other forums just to see whats out there.
My gogle serches come up with boring forums...

Perhaps if links weren't given but names were mentioned, then people could google and find them for themselves. For example, if I told someone to check tropical fish forums but didn't give them the link it'd be easy enough to find.

Also, Ethos, do you know why they are illegal to post?

Competition is hard.
People put money into this forum, they dont want it wasted if all of a sudden many people move from one forum to the next.
